nissan micra 2003 1.2l - dodgy dealers £100 nissan micra - Nissannadine

Buying a new Rover and selling our Nissan micra (2003 1.2l, 48,000miles). The Micra has power steering problems, making it stiff to drive, but does still work.. however, we know this is a big repairation job, and lowers the cars value quite a bit.. well maintained and very clean inside,, some exterior bumps and scarpes, but been dealt with professionally, no significant damage to bodywork. The dealer has offered only £100 part exchange for the micra.. looking at ads for 2003 micras, its apparent they are woth in the reigon of £1000 when in good working order... is the dealer giving us a bad deal??? should we sell the micra ourselves online from birmingham? £100 seems like the dealer is taking advantage to make a quick buck?... how much do you think the micra is worth? approx. many trhanks, nissan nadine

Firstly, the dealer only giving you £100 for the Micra indicates that he doesn't want it.Your car has a possible major fault which could cost hundreds of pounds to fix.On a car worth a max of £1000 most people would consider it uneconomical to repair and therefore scrap it.This is the value the dealer is offering you.Secondly, why are you buying a Rover? They were bad before they went bump and they don't get any better with age.As many on here will tell you,you need to be looking at Japanese cars if you want something reliable.I am assuming your not spending very much on the Rover as even the newest ones are 12 years old now.

Rovers are not too bad, just avoid the 1.8 K series engine.

An electric steering column repair on a Micra can be well over £5-600 to fix.It is not possible to use a s/hand unit as it forms part of the immobilser system.I guess that is why the offer is so low.Btw ,the K series Rover engine is a very strong engine with some very clever design features that other manufacturers have copied. But,beware of coolant loss/overheating and head gasket issues.

Something I don't understand about power assisted steering - when it fails, you can obviously still steer the car. Does it, however, take more effort than it would if the car didn't have PAS at all?

Absolutely,a car with failed pas will need more muscle power to turn the wheel than a car that never had pas in the first place.

When the power steering failed on my Grande Punto steering especially at parking speeds was like it was concrete waited and you really had to pull and push the steering wheel...not something you would want to do everyday.

I'd always imagined if it failed it became more like a car that didn't have power steering but it is nothing like that.

There's a much lower risk, surely, in having the PAS repaired on the Micra rather than buying a Rover, which is unlikely to be very much newer than your Nissan and will almost certainly have a higher mileage.

Get some quotes from independent garages and have it repaired if you think that you could then get the cost back in a better selling price: or you could keep it for a bit until you've saved enough for a decent Toyota.

A dealer giving you a £100 for the car has to stock it, sell it, and even at £1000ish is still liable to have to sell it in a roadworthy condition. And don't forget he cannot sell it as "trade" to a non trader "as seen"

So it is a £100 off the rover...

My mate had a current chevrolet aveo 62 reg, steering failed... £1400 sir..

I would repair the Nissan as long as the rest of the car is OK. It could well go on for many more years if cared for.

Which yours isn't...and the dealwer won't want it either as they won't want to fix it so will likley send it to auction - no quick buck to be made!

Selling it as-is, you'll get more on the Facebook car sales pages.

Personally I'd get some prices of repair costs and then weigh that up against how much good Micra's are fetching.
