You must have had a million of these questions on here, but I have been struggling for days to make a choice - by the time I do, all will have been sold ;)
I am looking for the best choice of these to take account of insurance, economy, tax and ongoing costs - ie anything to do with £££s.... Read more

You should Google the names of any companies you are thinking of dealing with and look for their reviews.
There's one company in Rainham, Essex, that's been on BBC's "Watchdog" fairly recently....
hello, can anyone help me out? im trying to find a relaible estate car to replace our golf that was recently deemed unecomnomical to repair! i dont have a huge budget - around £2000 , i like the sound of the toyota avensis estate but i think that from 2003 on they have dual mass flywheels as do most estate cars i look at. this worries me as the car will be mostlyused by someone who isnt the most mechanically sypathetic driver! (not me) are duel mass flywheels a weak spot of a car ?! im past confussed at the monment. are there any other cars to recommend for the money?! must be relaible and economical. thank you! Read more
Quite right - DMFs not exclusive to diesel engines, but due to greater torque and lower engine speeds, diesel DMFs can have a harder time of it and are potentially more vulnerable to failure than those in petrol engined cars as a result (especially since the greater torque of a diesel makes the car more likely to experience unsympathetic practices such as repeatedly moving off without any throttle eg in a queue of traffic).
Hi,
I had my cambelt replaced last August on 108991 miles, Saturday night I drove out of work less than 6 months on and the car at 113000 miles and my cambelt tensioner bolt sheered off causing the belt to come lose, no power , and broken down.... Read more
Another thing you have to factor in is the age of the car. You don't state how old it is, but if it's a Mk V it has to be at least 7 years old, and with over 100,000 miles on the clock and assuming it's always been privately owned suggests it's older than that. Unfortunately this means it isn't a new car, and therefore will have been subject to all sorts of wear and degradation during its life. This will make it even more difficult for any repairer to predict future failures, and would weaken your case against them even further.

The MOT history online is a very useful site. I thought I'd check the MOT history of this 74,000 miles, FSH, Focus. www.gumtree.com/p/ford/ford-focus-1.8-tdci-ghia-5d...4
April 2009 the miles covered was 4,689 miles, while a year earlier on April 2008 it had done 47,006. Therefore the true mileage must be nearer to 121,000. You'd have thought the dealer would have checked, especially as they are stating the mileage is warranted.... Read more
That's really great, DVD! The MOT site is certainly proving to be very useful in many different ways.
Last week while preparing our 2000 Focus 1.6 for its MoT I noticed the hanger at the front of the cat had completely corroded through leaving its supporting rods dangling. Fortunately my indy was able to weld them back for a tenner and achieve yet another pass with no advisories (apart from the brake fluid, oil, coolant and belts ;-). I am amazed that a bog standard Ford exhaust can last so long.
It doesn't seem long since the T**** vans were rattling around the counties with parts carefully engineered to expire about a month after the 3yr guarantee. Any advance on 16yrs? (not counting aftermarket SS exhausts) Read more
Thanks, all. Looks as though 'nailit' claims the record so far - those old Passats really were good; we had two second hand ones and got a total of 400,000m out of them.
Hi, I read a similar post here but it was just full of people complaining about parking on the pavement www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=25618
In my case, I should stress, parking on the pavement is actually recommended - as there is a sign saying so, therefore please spare me the "it's illegal to park on the pavement" etc.... Read more
Fantastic, thank you for the clear and concise answer!

I'm going for a Leon TDi 184 FR hatch at £199 a month on a 2 year lease, roughly the same car as a Golf GTD. There are many good lease deals as long as you do 10k miles a year or less that it doesn't seem worth funding or buying a £22k car and suffering the depreciation.
I'm in complete confusion about what tyre pressures to use on my A3. I've just fitted four new Michelin Cross-Climate Tyres to my A3 replacing 224/45 R17 91Y with 225/45 R17 94W spec tyres (which Michelin and the Tyre Dealer say are 100% compatible).
However the tyre pressure sticker on my car lists 32/29 PSI for 91Y tyres and 35/32 for 94V XL M+S.
So should I go with the higher or lower pressures, or somewhere inbetween? Read more
Hi
Can I 'bump' this? I just fitted four of these to my Audi A3 2.0 TDi (2014) and the fitter put 38F/35R in. This is the figure quoted on the door plate for M&S tyres which, to be fair, these are endorsed with....
Thanks for the suggestion, none of them have ever failed MOT (as far back as site goes) and what few advisories there are are minor - occassional tyre or headlight out of line, that sort of thing. Mind you, covers underneath can hide a lot I guess.
Interesting that low-mileage is not AUTOMATICALLY a bad thing.
