The Which? On-Line today ran an article comparing the use of handbrake and gearbox when parking. I'm sure the BRs have views on this. Do you use the gears plus the handbrake when parking or the handbrake or gears alone ? There were some very sensible comments following the Which? article.

My neighbour and I live on a hill with our driveways sloping down to the avenue. My neighbour still insists that someone was trying to steal his car when one morning it was found across the avenue with its front wheels against the opposite neighbours garden wall. I question whether he had parked up using the handbrake alone and the shoes had cooled off and relaxed.... Read more

"....once I've stopped I now don't release my clutch until I've turned the engine off, put in gear , applied the handbrake firmly and released the footbrake." (Big John, above)

I agree - it's worth getting into that habit if you don't already. It should avoid undue strain on the DMF and other moving parts.

Hi,can anyone come up with answer to misfire on number four cylinder,no sign of mayo in rocker box or water system, done usual things cleaned throttle body, changed plugs, coil pack, cleaned egr but still same, car does not boil, goes ok on higher revs but goes back to misfire as soon as revs come down, many thanks Read more

Simon

I'd try another coil pack if I was you. I've had a similar fault with a 1.4 16v Astra, it ran fine at a reasonable rpm but stuttered from idle and misfired upon pressing the throttle. A new coil pack fixed it.

currently replacing my 2012 x3 and looking at the newer model (2.0 SE) or a 2.0 land rover discovery sport.

In terms of efficiency and economy they appear on par. I've test drove both, the x3 still feels more of a 'drivers car', though the LR does handle well.... Read more

The Disco Sport beats the latest X3 and new Merc GLC in all the tests, now it has the new Ingenium engine it seems the best by some margin. If you don't do any off roading, fiellds, bad lanes then the X3 for normal driving may be well suited and a set of winter tyres for the cold snap should give you all the 4wd performance you need.

ive got a 55plate vauxhall vivaro with the f9q760 engine, my problem is that my rev counter is bobbing up and down. it tends to do it at low speeds ie 20mph ish? and when stationary its gose down to zero then flicks up and down but wile this is happening the glow plug light is flashing on and off like a disco? has any one come across this before ?? now it wont start at all,,, i want to find out as much as i can before i take it any were to be looked at many thanks Read more

Peter.N.

Don't know much about this car but its possible that its connected to the rev counter fault as this will be driven from a sensor, possibly crankshaft or camshaft, if the sensor has now failed or is not connected it could cause the problem. You need the fault codes read.

Hi! I`m new to the site and I would appreciate any help at all. This is an unsual situation (I think!). Just over a year ago I bought a Ford Focus from Motorpoint in Newport. The car was only 6mths old and still had over 2 years of the manufacture`s warranty to run. The extended warranty was not to kick in until 2017 (Sept). Unfortunately I was involved in an accident last week and the insurance company have told me that the car is a write-off. I rang Motorpoint this week and was told that I was not eligible for a refund for the extended warranty (£300). Now my arguement is that the insurance is null and void since the object to be insured does not now exist. Since the policy does not start until 2017 I have not, and will not in the future, benefit from its protection henceI should be refunded the premium. It is my intention to complain to the FCA. Does anyone have an opinion on this issue? Thanks for any help..kemyst Read more

I suppose i might consider an extended manufacturers warrantly if available through a dealer at point of sale--but by golly I would read the smallprint first. The best benefit--if ANY(!?) is the fact that the dealership is obliged to make every effort quickly to "put right" what has gone wrong. Of course--all fair wear and tear items are rarely covered.

Hi all. I have a 2007 astra van and most of the time, but not always, the boot won't open when I push the button and sometimes the light on dash comes on to say theres a door open aswell as the interior lights in the boot? (Even though all doors are closed) Ive had to take the bulkhead out so i can open the boot with a screwdriver from the inside. Ive been told its a faulty ecu in the boot? Read more

I would think it more likely to be a door latch actuator or wiring fault to the tailgate.Check the wiring through the rubber tube from body to tailgate.

I have a 1.6 2007 petrol zetec 115ps 140000 miles

I was having trouble with the throttle sensors causing my car to go to limeted speed mode with the message 'engine system faliure'. I bought throttle body from a 2009 1.6 zetec, the part was actually manufactured 2008, and fitted it.... Read more

Probably nothing wrong with throttle body-could be connector or wiring.

I started reading HJ's advice in the Telegraph 20-odd years ago. In those days he used to reply to questions and queries by hand! Still got one of his letters somewhere, when I asked about the frequency of oil changes on a new car....

Having recently posted a 'positive' story about my car passing the MOT, reasonable cost for brakes, etc., and how I was looking forward to a trip to France, it had to happen, didn't it?

Trip to France went well, 1100+ miles of mixed motoring @50mpg (some loaded down with Chateau Plonk) until ... Monday night, 50 miles from home, at western end of M4, had to stop because of serious overheating (red warning lights and gauge at max). No loss of coolant, oil ok, electric fan working. Cooled down quickly (outside temp 5 deg). Belts in place and working.... Read more
