Looking to get some new tyres for the C1 in the near future. OEM is Michelin and I'm inclined to stick with them.

Michelin currently have a fuel gift card offer on and I'm just wondering what this card is. The value depends on the size and number of tyres purchased; £25 for the four tiny tyres on the C1 which brings the price down to £40 a corner.... Read more

Thanks Galaxy.

I had a gift card from buying car insurance a few years back. That was a pre-loaded Barclaycard. Assumed the Michelin one would be the same sort of thing.

Can anyone advise on where we might obtain confirmation as to which make/model of dampers were installed onto our 2011 Sharan?

It has done 150,000 miles and as we plan to keep the car for a long time but it has become springy (one is leaking), we want to renew the two front dampers (and rears if necessary) and any worn bushes but want to ensure that the original make and type of dampers are used, rather than after-market ones which have different handling/ride characteristics.... If you want to keep it to original spec, then go to VW for the parts.Right parts first time with no ifs or buts.Best to keep it the way it came out the factory.

Just toying with this, and wondering if the collective have any idea of the real costs involved.

Supposing someone, me, was considering grey importing the above vehicle used from Japan, cost of car in Japan say £5000 for arguments sake (could be anywhere between £4 and £8k depending), roughly what costs on top of that would be payable by the time the car was legal on the road here.... ^ very interesting, I can see the attraction of a car that has never seen salt. Yes the rear subframe on mine is currently converting itself to iron oxide :(

Bilt Hamber...have a poke nose on t'internet, they make very good waxes and paints for dealing with such things.

Hi All,

I recently got 3 speeding tickets in a very short space of time (about a month). I sent them all off, was going to take the slap on the wrist, learn from it then move one, however only got 2 replies, so naively I thought I mustn't have sent one off as they would not make a mistake like that at there end and sent a letter to the same address with all my details asking if they could take that letter as an acceptance of the conditional offer, still no response. Two months later I have received a failure to indetify, I have proof of the letter I sent on my laptop and the date I had created the document, however did not send it via recorder deilvery. The 3 points for speeding I am not contesting at all, however the failure to identify I believe I am not guilty as I even sent them a letter when I didn't hear a response and it will also obviously give me a totting up ban as the penalty for that would bring me over 12. What is the likelyhood of being found not guilty if I contest it? I have no other choice as both my and my girlfriend work insane hours and are very unsociable (6am starts 12am finishes etc) and public transport just will not get us to and from work as it doesn't start early enough or run late enough.

Thanks for any replies. Read more

Just goes to show that you can't beat the old Royal Mail and a certificate of posting for sure fire evidence. I certainly would not rely upon electronic mail or telephone calls in such circumstances. Live and learn.

I hope they accept your explanation as it seems a genuine error and I hope your points total doesn't result in a disqualification. If you are given a another chance them you will need to be on your best behaviour for quite a while. Best of luck and let us know the outcome....

The engine management light comes on intermittently - one journey on; one journey off. MB diagnostic test is inconclusive. (HJ suggested using Shell V Power which I will try) Anyone got any other ideas or remedies. Thanks Read more

My helpful, local Independent MB garage plugged in a diagnostic laptop. No fault was logged. HJ suggested, as a first step, I fill up with Shell V Power fuel. I drove till nearly empty and filled with the Shell fuel. The EML went out and has stayed out. Does this say something about supermarket fuels? Thanks HJ.

Our 2010 Golf GTI (c72k miles) failed to start on Monday - previously extremely reliable. It was towed to a VW dealer who eventually advises that there is no compression on any cylinder and is unsure what may have caused the problem - maybe timing belt? He advises it may well be that the only solution is a new engine.

Is this fault common in Golfs, GTI or otherwise? Is there conceivably another solution that avoids the no-doubt huge expense of a new engine? And if there is no other solution, is it worth asking VW for a goodwill contribution?... Read more

Brilliant dealer, no compression guv, haven't a clue why, suggest new engine will cure it.

My suggestion is to drive away from that place of lunacy with your car on a trailer as quickly as possible making the sign of the cross with your fingers in their direction, and as above, let a mechanic have a good poke nose and see what he can come up with.

I have a 2008 Diesel Corsa 1.3 Club, the Spanner light came on and the garage has told me that the Glow Plugs need changing. They said this could be an easy job, or a very long job if the plugs are seized. Currently the car starts fine - even on -6deg mornings. Is there any hurry to getthis work done? Thanks, Paul Read more

Leave them alone .The garage is correct. It is very likely they will be seized in the cylinder head and may need to be machined out if they snap.Big job.

The drain plug for the gearbox appears to be the one with a nut head about 24 mm across flats, it that right please?

The drain plug for the transfer box appears to be with an Allen key drive, is that right please?... Read more

Early gearbox oil changes used to be recommended. I consider the 1st to 2nd change to be somewhat bulking. Toyota dealer happy to do an oil change at my expense. I would prefer to do it myself using the best oil available which is not Toyota brand.

I'm getting a strange inflating sound when I turn the key to light the dashboard. Also sometimes when I turn ignition off a deflating can be heard for a few seconds. It's the first time I've owned a diesel so sorry if this is obvious. It sounds like a beach ball inflating and deflating. What on earth is it? Airbag? Pump of some sort? Thanks for any help Read more

I asked exactly the same question when I first bought my Mark 3 Mondeo!

There's a small fan which blows air over a temperature sensor to measure the ambient temperature. The noise is probably that. It starts when you turn the ignition on and runs down when you turn it off....
