Toyota Avensis '53 Estate T3-x (T25) - What questions should I ask Recon Gearbox Supplier - Ian Harley

Hi,

Just bought a second hand car that needs a replacement gearbox (whole story in legal). I have got some quotes in for both used and recon units, and would like to know if there is anything I should be asking the suppliers of the recon gearboxes.

They come with 12 month warranties as opposed to 1 to 3 monthes on the used boxes, but should I (or is it reasonable to?) ask for a report? Is there anything else I should ask?

Many thanks

Ian

If you go for a recon box make sure that it is reconditioned and not just a cleaned up secondhand one. If you can get a second hand one cheap enough I would go with that, I don't think I have ever bought a duff second hand one - there's always a first time of course.

Thanks for the reply. How do I make sure 'It Is' reconditioned?

You should Google the names of any companies you are thinking of dealing with and look for their reviews.

There's one company in Rainham, Essex, that's been on BBC's "Watchdog" fairly recently.

There's another place over in the Heathrow area which always keeps coming up in these consumer programmes, too.

Both of these are to be avoided like the plague but I'm sure they aren't the only ones. Unfortunately, the engine and gearbox "Reconditioning" business does appear to attract more than it's fair share of rogue traders.
