hi all.

need to pick your brains on this one. on all mrk4 astra i thought that when you start the engine you see the water returning to the expansion bottle on idle, well i had a rad leak, replaced rad, then replaced thermostat as the little plastic elbow on the pipe to the expansion bottle from here had snapped! crap plastic design! well replaced thermostat and housing as comes complete, well before i changed the thermostat/housing which is the same when i started car from cold you see water circulating back into the expansion bottle, well put new thermostat etc on and now only circulates the water when at norm temp or when you are at high revs! nothing has really changed, our other astra a 2002 sxi has water circulating back to expansion bottle from cold from turning the key as mine used to do until i done the above!..., can anyone advise if this is normal what is happening on my astra please? i have traveled many miles with my car since and does not overheat and heater is nice and hot and has no air blocks etc! just curious to know which is right or wrong please? many thanks to all and sorry for the essay!...............

does anyone know is the above normal or have i got a stuck opne thermostat on my other astra as it circulates the water constantly back to exp bottle even at cold when you start the car. Read more

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply.

My concern regarding leaving my dog in the car is that I have to disable the alarm, which leaves the car just locked and I dont want the electrics to malfunction....

Intercooler burst (with a loud bang) at 96 thou miles. A known problem. New intercooler off the net at £100 delivered. (Some companies charge silly money) Easy to fit if a little fiddly. Read more

The 4-stud, 5-spoke alloys have leaked from new - a well known problem. After 16 years of weekly inflating I've decided to make a real effort to have inner tubes fitted. Nobody wants to know. Will the valve holes be in the right place or are there other reasons that tyre firms will not disclose ? Advice would be greatly appreciated, if necesary I would consider making a drill jig for new valve holes. Read more

You have to partially deflate the tyre to 20 PSI then inject the sealer then inflate the tyre so you will need a compressor. This clears the valve of any sealer and of course inflates the tyre to the correct pressure. Regards Peter

Thanks again Peter.

Takata are one of the worlds large suppliers of airbags into the automotive industry. I dare say many on here will already have read about the supply of sub standard airbags which are known to have resulted in a number of deaths. In the US Takata have been fined by authorities for the way they handled this debacle.

Here in the UK Nissan, Honda and Toyota have recalled about 600,000 vehicles between them to have inflator modules replaced across a number of models.... Read more

Thanks for your comment.

There seem to be some mixed opinions floating around on this website about the Ford 1.8TDCi engines. There are quite a few people saying avoid these common rail diesel engines like the plague....

Any recommendations for a reliable small auto for my mum.... Read more

Don't bother look at electric cars, as in your mum's case:

  1. They are expensive for those doing low mileages (high purchase cost);
  2. Charging stations are VERY few and far between and don't take 5 minutes, so all those nice frozen peas bought at the local supermarket will have been well on the way to being defrosted by the time it was done. Similarly being on low charge when out at a friends might end up in her being stranded on a busy main road on the way home if it runs out of power (most have a very short range which might last say 50-80 miles) - its not always easy to judge how far you've got left if the weather is changeable and she needs to use the A/C or heater which consume a LOT of power in electric cars (no heat given off by the IC engine to help warm the airflow);
  3. They are a new technology and (as my elderly parents will attest to) won't likely go down well as its all to much wizz-bang inside. They just want something easy to use that's not complex and is reliable.

As such (as others have said), go with the small, Japanese (/Korean) and petrol - Jazz/Yaris/Mazda 2/i10 or i20, etc with the LEAST amount of electronic gadgets as is necessary. The only thing to worry about is whether to have tea or coffee when she gets it serviced.
