Just read that the German authorities have confirmed the terrible train crash last week was caused by human error. This comes just days after the event where 11 people lost their lives.

If this had happened here, we would have had to have had several very expensive public enquiries and maybe in five years time and after £millions spent on lawyers, we may have got to the same conclusion?... Read more

After aviation, the rail industry has pretty rigorous safety procedures. Commercial road transport (haulage and buses) comes a bit further down but private motoring is very near the bottom, with too many motorists and bikers believing that risk-taking and getting away with breaking the rules is part of the 'game'.

Google 'RAIB' and 'MAIB' to read the detailed investigations and reports on respectively Rail and Marine accidents. No effort is spared to find root causes and make recommendations for prevention of future incidents, technical details, photographs, really instructive....

The police officer has been to my house today and asked me to come down the station Sunday at 10am for an interview.

Must not have much serious crime in your area, would have expected a NIP asking to identify the driver, just so they could send the NIP and give the fine and points.

There is a 'stop sales' order on all VW diesels in the USA. So I read Honest John's review and noticed he finds the 2016 Prius:

"So while the Prius is an excellent car, while I’m all for petrol hybrids and while I’m happy to make a strong case for it, it isn't my kind of car."... Read more

I big car like that only with a 30 mile range - what a waste of time! Surely if people wanted a city-only car (where a 30 mile range/day would be ok) they'd go for a far smaller all-electric car, or a Prius for that matter.

The Ampera's poor mpg (see HJ review) when on petrol-mode rather spoiled it when running up against similar sized diesels which are probably quicker and more fuel efficient on longer runs, especially on motorways where TDs excel. The wrong car for its time/usage in my view, probably why it didn't sell well compared to the Prius and was dropped by Vauxhall/GM.

Hi

I have had and still have an intermiitent drain on car battery, new battery {bossch s3} fitted only a year ago, daily mileage 28/30 - annual 6-8k car will be fine for a period of 3 /6 weeks with no problem or 12/48 hours then battery totally flat, but starts first time when jump started. after a 4 or 5 times of this happening and becoming increasingly frustrated i booked the car into a reputable auto electrican who had the car on test for 12 hours but could not detect a drain but then would he ?? as it was intermittent and i had no idea when the battery would discharge, again totally frustrating at o.4.40 am when i left the house for work and the battery was totally flat - anyway cut a long story short on the advice of my garage/auto electician decieded to have a promax 12 v isolator fitted and it was explained that this would work if the isolator sensed a drain via the battery it would shut down everything, preserving enough power in the battery to restart the car - i know the isolator works as i have experienced drain on 3 or 4 occasions since having fitted and never failed UNTIL the a couple of days ago, a recent cold snap with tempratures down to +1 - -3 degrees, went to the car as normal tried to open with fob but nothing, opened with key as i could see that isolator had kicked in - nothing at all on dash display, no concerns at this point, expexting isolator to kick back in, when turning the ignition key as normal - but nothing at all, had to jump off the wifes audi, it was only then that the isolator kciked back in and it started first time - now not taking any chances due to early start, and disconnecting the positive termial after 14 mile journey, but have tested the isolator since and hey presto works fine after each 14 mile journey... Finding an erratic battery drain can be often be an impossible task.Modern cars can take ages for the electrics to shut down, sometimes up to an hour. You may be better off to install a cut off switch that gives a full disconnection. There is one type that fits on the neg post of the battery and has a screw down connector bar. Some years ago,I had an Audi A3 that with exactly the same problem. It would run for weeks no problem ,the all of a sudden it would be flat overnight.Never did find the fault.Focus models are not known for any drain issues, but it may be an idea to check the cabin fuse box in the passenger footwell for any water ingress.

One of my friends told me that he had been travelling to Wales on the motorway every weekend this winter. With the frequent heavy rain the motorway was covered with standing water so he was driving in the nearside lane at 50 or so mph to avoid aquaplaning. He remarked that he was passed frequently by cars doing in excess of 70 mph. If the drivers had to brake or change direction they would cause chaos, if not loss of life.

Do the driving instructors nowadays teach about aquaplaning ?... Read more

Like just about everything nowadays, the minimum profile is governed by EU regulations so the German minimum is also 1.6 mm.

The 1.6mm limit is a UNECE global standard - so not directly from EU or UK legislation although enacted there.
