On 2 occasions on startup there has been a loud rumbling and shaking of the engine and it feels as if there is a misfiring on the cylinders. On turning off and restarting there has been no problem. The Ford main dealer cannot find a problem and states there are no error codes. Mileage is 25k Read more

Have one of these, a 80kw 1.6 tdci fited with dpf.

Had the same problem last winter an I realised it was related to the cold wather that made evident some problems, the injectors. Untill they warm up, injectors will have a delayd mechanical reaction. Parts inside are small and need as little friction as posible but as euro5 diesel has less lubricity, you get the point. I recomed adding an aditive to lube and clean the injectors as you go. In my case DuraLube did it and helped me in the past with a stuck open injector on my Fiat Stillo Jtd....

When I reset the Instantaneous fuel consumption on my car and then drive the figure fluctuates dramatically from 10mpg to 90mpg! What is going on?! Read more

Seriously ?

It records the economy at that instant in time (hence why it is called instantaneous). So if you're not touching the accelerator (slowing down for a junction, for example), you're doing 99mpg. If, on the other hand, you're accelerating away at a brisk pace, then you can easily see 5-10 mpg....

What does it mean if the glow plug light does not go on when you turn the ignition before starting when the engine is cold? Read more

Thanks for that Doctor! I haven't had this car a week yet and had borrowed an identical 2010 Mondeo on the run up to buying the new one. That one's glow plug light always came on for the first start of the day, and then only flicked on subsequently.
For this 'new' (to me) car, the glow plug light came on every morning in the same way until yesterday when I noticed that it didn't. Later in the day the car 'refused to start' and the battery had to be changed since which it's started fine but the glow plug light didn't come on after 24 hours - though it's not quite zero degrees.
I'm an engine ignoramus but am keen to tackle any problems before I've had the car too long!

Hi All

Went to change my spark plugs this afternoon and the very first one I went to was stuck fast. I leaned on the plug spanner as hard as I dared, but no dice. ... Read more

Thanks again. Too late to take the advice about blowing debris out of the housings, but noted for next time.

I warmed the engine up, gave each spark housing a decent squirt of Plus Gas, waited for about 30 seconds and one by one they all shifted, though admittedy the one I initially had trouble with was still pretty stiff....

Googling online Mercedes handbooks brings up a lot of entries. Didn't pursue to see costs or specific models but might be worth a look.

I appear to have an immobiliser fault on this car. It was perfectly OK when I parked it up but stood for a couple of weeks and then wouldn't start. The inside was very damp and the immobiliser light was on, I left the doors open on a bright and breezy day, next time I tried it no light and it started.

It has since been parked up again and got damp, immobiliser light on and won't start, tried drying it out but no go this time. It was a bit wet under the drivers side carpet but the connectors all seem in good condition and I have dried it out. The key is being detected because if you leave it in and open the door it bleeps and stops when you take it out.... Read more

What 'appears' to have alerted you to this?

Look on alignmycar to find somewhere near you with a Hunter rig and have it measured. A skilled operator may even be able to help identify the cause even if you have to go to another garage to get it fixed. He'll also know whethr it can be adjusted (it'll be in the Hunter database for sure).

Once upon a time some BMWs had a switch behind the headlights to alter the dip from left to right but then along came Xenons and things got a bit more difficult.

My 2010 F10 BMW 520d M Sport had Xenons and they were adjustable but it required one to scramble under the front wheelarches, remove an access panel and fiddle about until your fingertips just located the switch which altered the beam. I used to curse having to do it but the BMW dealer told me they'd have charged £200 a throw to do it so at least I felt better for the effort....
