Hi all,

The front struts were replaced on the car (Citroen Xsara Picasso 2005 2.0 HDI), and after a while a creaking-scraping noise developed from the front offside of the car. It only occurs at sharp left turns at low speeds, while the steering wheel is rotated. After quite a bit of investigation (it cannot be reproduced when stationary) I think I now what happens: the spring touches the inside of the chassis at a point, and there is a visible mark there where the plastic lining scraped off.... Like albapa I also thought the new spring was binding against the wheel arch but now I see a different problem. The new spring - KYB so not a cheapy - slightly overhangs the lower and upper strut plates with signs that the coil slips partially off both plates when the wheel is turned ( you can see that paint has rubbed off the bottom spring coil where it slides off the plate.) This sends a clunking noise through the coil to the bodywork. Also the top bearing feels very tight. So I have ordered: new top (part rubber) mounting plate and bearing; new coil spring; and new strut. The diameter of the spring meets KYB specification so its apparent 'oversize' is a mystery. Weird! I'll report back!

Had this vehicle 5 years and it has always been sensitive to fuel filters. It will cut out but always restart immediately then run for another few miles before it happens again, this can also happen going around left hand sharp bends. It also only runs properly if the fuel filler cap is not tightened fully, always assumed the breather is blocked but not a major issue.
A filter change cures the problem....... until now.
It now cuts out if I try to rev above 2000 rpm or put any load on it eg.going up a hill ,but again always restarting .
Filter change has had no effect, and running it from a separate fuel source incase the fuel lines/tank is the problem has also failed to cure it.
I read a thread on here about someone with a older model 2.5 with a near identical problem.
The cure was to locate and clean the micro line filter in the pump.......so does anyone know if the pump on my 3.0 dura tech engine has a similar filter ? Or can advise if the fault lies else where?
It's worth mentioning that currently it will still accelerate to 70 mph down hill as long as I don't push the throttle beyond the point that it cuts out , if that makes sense. Read more

Well' I got up this morning not looking forward to working out in the snow knowing that I would be wasting my time and Its probably time to look for another vehicle, but it's worth one last try.
Removing the banjo bolt was easy enough.
And there pressed into the bottom I could see a brass insert, this is a tight fit and impossible to remove.
I could get air to flow through it by sucking on the end but there was some resistance.
So I put it in some petrol and tapped both ends, initially no debris came out.......then slowly very very fine particles started to appear.
Now I could suck air through it very easily !
Starting after reassembly the first unusual thing that happened was the management light extinguished immediately, normally after changing the filter it would take a few cycles of driving before it would happen.
So , although i don't like to tempt fate, I do believe this has been the fault all along. And a fresh filter ( and loosening the fuller cap, will try tighening this now) was previously just offering a little less resistance to fuel flowing through the partially blocked banjo until it was blocked almost totally.
This fault has plagued me for over 50k miles and 6 years of ownership , and one expensive visit to a diesel specialist, who could not replicate the fault !
Thank you for everyone's input .
I just might try the lottery tonight !

Got a new Forester XT - brilliant car in almost every way except the alarm goes off randomly for no apparant reason. Narrowed it down to the Microwave Sensor using the alarm status LED and started deleting the sensor using the keypad underneath the dash every time I switched the engine off. However, you can't expect to have to do this with a new car so contacted the dealer who told me the Microwave Sensor is affected by mobile phones and having a phone near the centre console while driving will play havoc with the sensor settings and possibly cause the alarm to trigger at 3am, as has happened a few times. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a fix - can the sensor be changed or, as a last resort, disconnected? A lot of modern cars have these sensors so the Forester can't be the only model affected.

After dithering for a while I finally purchased a used Forester XT in June this year (a 66 plate). Funnily enough the only trouble I've had so far has been the aircon...I noticed driving it home from the dealer it wasn't working at all. Phoned 'Dales Subaru' who couldn't have been more helpful to sort it. They were very apologetic, and drove over to my house to collect car (a 1 hr journey each way), left me a brand new Outback to use, then brought my car back later that afternoon. It had a new condenser and a re-gas. They just said 'no charge it's all under warranty.' Whether same situation if I'd had car 6 mths I don't know but obviously a weak point on these vehicles.

Alarm only gone off once when I accidentally left phone in car (not in cubby but was on back seat)....

There's a big distinction between manual parking brakes operating pads via dual purpose rear calipers (which are prone to losing grip when cooling), and the more expensive and more effective design of drum inside disc parking brakes, indeed i'd suggest a traditional rear drum brake operating the same shoes for both foot and parking brake is more than adequate for most vehicles, and provides a much better handbrake to boot not affected anywhere near the same by heat contraction.

The only downside IMO to rear drum brakes is that they get even less inspection by the current farce called servicing, and when shoe replacements are required its a bit of a faff on some (not helped by the trend to build the drum and bearing carrier into one hub unit, kerching), however generally rear brake shoes last nigh on 100k miles and often enough rear drums never need replacement in the life of a vehicle...but they don't impress the impressionable so discs it is whether needed or not.

I don't know if octane decreases during prolonged storage, unfortunately I believe it's human intervention.

Seriously, it does - the refineries use various additional "fuels" to boost the octane up to the required number but in variable amounts as oil refining is a continuously variable process - it's these additional "fuels" that evaporate more readily than the base fuel, so reducing it's octane value....

Hi folks

We picked up a used Focus Estate 1.5 diesel last month and within the first week it began flashing up messages on the dash saying "Tyre sensors not detected check handbook". The TPMS light flashes then stays on. ... Read more

Ford had a look yesterday (gave me a 15 plate Fiesta as a courtesy car with 3 miles to empty worth of fuel in it....) and said they checked all tyre pressures and reset the TPMS via the IDS system.

Will see how it goes - thanks for the responses.

I suppose it is all to do with what equipt they have used.A cheap tester is not accurate enough.Good ones do a conductance test, but they are not cheap.Aside this,I have found Halfords to be well overpriced on batteries,so you are better off now.

This will take a bit to explain so please bear with me.

I purchased my 2012 Fiat Bravo 1.6 multijet with 14k on the clock from a main dealer in Oxfordshire (shan't mention their name now as I'm not sure how that would be accepted here). Took delivery of it on 16th December 2015.... Read more

Glad to see that (eventually !) it seems to be getting sorted. Pain in the backside that it has been, unfortunately, such a long-winded process to get there.

You may find that the dealer is on Trustpilot or another such review site. As such, you may be able to leave a review for them on there. I'm aware that HJ doesn't allow poor reviews like this on dealerships - understandably, as there is too much potential for false reviews to be left, and websites can be held responsible for those, in law....

Hi,
Can someone kindly advise as to the problems and pitfalls of buying a Malta import?

The car in question is a Ford Focus 1.0 Zetec spec, the spec seems identical to the UK spec.

The price is considerably cheaper than a pre reg UK spec car.

What are the pitfalls?
Cons?
Problems?
Will it have a proper V5?

Thank you for any help. Read more

Malta is in the EU isn't it? Why do you need to pay import duty etc. Are we only in the EU when it suits the powers that be then?

I've just picked up an Audi TT (2002). The car is very clean with an excellent service history.
On inspection at the garage I noticed the OSF side light was out, which the seller gladly replaced when mentioned. Traveling home I had to use the headlights which all seemed fine, then the next day I noticed the OSF side light had blown again which I just put down as one of them things and replaced it. This evening ( a few days later) it's blown again. Has any body got any ideas as to what may be the cause so that I have a general area to investigate when I go out tomorrow to try and sort it.
Many thanks Read more

There are only two things which will normally cause a bulb to fail, one is over voltage, in which case it should affect the other bulbs, or excessive vibration, otherwise as already suggested poor quality bulbs.

I usually use 'Ring' bulbs from Ebay, pretty cheap and no problems.
