I read in the newspaper that both the AA and the RAC are separately developing a device that will alert them to problems in their members vehicles - before a fault happens. The devices will be matchbox sized and will probably radio to the motoring organisation. Has anybody seen this and can tell how it works ? Read more

The other day I listened to one of the cold calling messages about central heating boilers I usually delete automatically on the first sentence.
He said that from the end of 2016 all homes MUST have an A rated boiler. I do not believe this to be the case, but wondered if there is anything that could possibly be distorted to justify the claim. Read more
Like all gas boilers must have a 3/4" supply gas pipe, except it ain't retrospective!
That isn't true, The gas supply pipe to a boiler must be able to supply the right quantity of gas to the boiler to give the correct working pressure. In effect, if you boiler was right above the gas meter. It would be possible to run it on a 15mm pipe or if like mine it's a long way from the meter it has to have a 32mm pipe with all pulled bends to reduce pressure loss.
Much to my (pleasant) surprise I found out that instead of a fixed time for changeover, both cars are covered for 24 hours when I collect my new car monday. Read more
Isn't that normal ?
I always use the free 7-day insurance from the dealer to ensure full cover over the changeover period.

I live one and a half miles from the sea and regularly drive along the seafront - it's one of the pleasures of being here. If there's salt in the air, you see it straightaway because it appears on the windscreen. I've seen it less than 6 times since 2002. It only happens when the tide is in and the sea is really rough....

I have a perception that not many dealers provide a viewing area of the service bay where you can watch your own car being serviced.
I would like to know which do as I would even travel to a different area to use one with this facility. (Have a day out, even take the OH).... Read more
I am however, impressed by the local Mercedes dealer I use, who email me an attachment of the "visual health check", which is a 3 to 4 minute film of the technician going around underneath the car showing the condition of pads and discs, tyres, exhaust, suspension and steering components etc.

I have enquired with Millers and they have said "I can confirm that we do not put Manganese in our Petrol Power Ecomax Treatment" so it should be safe to use.
It will undoubtably be a dongle that plugs into the OBDII port. Other interesting data available from the OBDII port is road speed, throttle position, gear selected (in some cars) - I wouldn't really want to be transmitting that data to anybody. How long before the police demand the data from them after an accident? If you're insured with the AA - will they use the data to get out of insurance claims?
I suspect they'll have to produce two versions. one two-part version that contains a super slim bluetooth sender which sends to the local "brain" containing the comms and computing power and one self contained version for cars which have plenty of room around the port.
