Hi, New to the forum, looking to find out if the polo we have bought for our son should have an engine cover. Have just changed out the pencil coils, plugs and battery and noticed it does not have a cover. Have looked for a bar code sticker on the top butthere isn't one, its only done 27, 000 and and so would like to replace it if it had one. Seems to be after reading a few posts that some people think that polos of this year possibly were not fitted with one. Any help appreciated. Read more

My latest 2nd hand car, a 2012 Audi A4 with Quattro, was delivered with an out of shape 18" alloy wheel (front left) which caused a lot of vbrations at high speed. Took it back to the garage and they replaced it under g'tee. However, if the previous owner had driven like this for 10-20k, what else could have been damaged behind the wheel ? (not convinced that just replacing the wheel has completely solved the problem).

Thanks for any ideas you may have. Read more

I'd second the reply re the need for tyres to be within a few mm on a 4x4. I'f you have just had a new tyre fitted on the new alloy this could upset things.

It's because it effictively puts the differentials/Haldex under stress

Steve B posted this on a sticky thread:

"Dear Avant,

Just realised from your article about white taxis in Wellingborough that we may live in the same area.

I am currently in Mears Ashby and would like to share knowledge of local garages and suppliers as we both have a love for Audis , where your column name originates.

Hope to hear from you.

Cheers,

Yes it was Gordon Bennet who spoke about the white taxis in Wellingborough.

Hi, the car wont go above 3000 revs. i put it in the garage and they are saying i need a new ECU at £850. The yellow spanner light is on but the engine management light does not come on. Everything on the car is working but it just wont go over 3000 revs. Any ideas? Read more

It probably does have DPF, my 2007 1.3 CDTi has a DPF unfortunately. Although it has never caused any problems apart from costing £12-50 for a little pipe for the sensor as the old one was stuck solid in the link pipe.

hi guys we are a bit new to this so please be patient. we have a 52 plate vectra c sxi. we have had a few problems with our power steering lately. it stiffens up when turning then corrects itself. this is very intermitant but still very annoying. are there supposed to any warning lights coupled up with this as we are getting none. we changed our battery 2 weeks ago as the garage said the alternator was fine. This morning we have had the emissions light come on and the power steering played up then. could they be linked? thanks for any advice guys in advance. Read more

RobJP

Highly unlikely to be linked

Have you checked the power steering fluid level ?...

W Reg I have just bought this car and is a lovely drive, great condition. Or so it seemed. It consumes oil really quickly. I can see a leak ie no patch under car, there are no puffs of smoke black, blue or otherwise from exhaust. No smells.

The oil light flashed me 2 days after purchase so i checked oil and it was empty nothing registered on dipstick at all. So filled till between the 2 dots - nearly 5 litres. 2 weeks later flashing again, nothing registering on dipstick again. this is going to be an expensive hobby.... Read more

If you bought it from a car dealer then I'd take it back and ask for a refund.

Our 2015 Yeti started making a metallic clicking noise when turning on extreme lock, and only started doing so at 1400 miles.. Dealer confirmed noise from CV joint, but said it was normal for this car and will therefore take no action. It is my third Yeti and this has not happened with the others. Do you think this is normal? If not, any suggestions please? Dealer not allowed to carry out work under warranty unless sanctioned from head office. Is the car safe like this? Thank you. Read more

Many years ago, when Austin 1100s were first released, sales engineers from our company were provided these. A year or so later, one was unfortunately killed, the cause was a CV joint seizing and throwing the car into a tree....

No. 1 son passed his test today first time. Really chuffed for him as he doesn't do exams or stress at all well.

Don't need to get him a car just yet. As school is only a ten minute walk and I'm hoping he takes a gap year in September. But I would like him to drive which he now cannot do without insurance.... So recommendations for a good broker for a new driver? Read more
