MY 2001 530DSE AUTO HAS STARTED TO WHINE WHEN ACCELERATING IN LOW GEAR. THE NOISE STOPS WHEN I LIFT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND IS NOT PRESENT AT HIGHER SPEEDS. SHOULD I CHANGE THE GEARBOX OIL AND FILTER? BMW SAY THEY ARE SEALED FOR LIFE BUT IN LAST WEEKEND'S DAILY TELEGRAPH YOU ADVISED SOMEONE WITH A DIFFERENT MAKE OF CAR TO CHANGE THE GEARBOX OIL TO CURE A SIMILAR WHINE. IF I DO NOTHING WILL THE GEARBOX BE LIKELY TO FAIL? A LOCAL GARAGE HAS SAID CHANGING THE OIL MIGHT MAKE IT WORSE. PLEASE ADVISE Read more

I think you probably have the widely used ZF 5 HP 19 which indeed carries the recommendation 'sealed for life' and is virtually bullet-proof. Are you sure the whine is from the g/box?

The cluch on my 530 D Has a high take up point at 140K but works fine.

Its been recommended that I consider changing the clutch soon and was quoted £130 plus exhaust parts that may get damaged on removal.... Read more

Hi all Just wanted to share my recent experience and write a good recommendation for The Automotive Inspecto.r It's not often you get what's advertised or promised but I can honestly say they exceeded their promise. From first contact to receiving my report i was kept totally informed. They contacted the seller and made all the arrangement and called me once inspection was completed to update me. Later the same evening I received a link via email to follow to my own folder on their server where I was able to view and download everything. 63 photos and lots of other stuff including HPI check Certs and reports, a full print out of my on board diagnostics and a full check list off hundreds of items checked with summary of vehicle condition and advice as to value. All car papers checked and images supplied. I did buy the car and managed to knock off £400 from asking price to cover the cost of a full set of tyres. I don't normally leave reviews but was so impressed. Total cost I paid was £99.99 which I feel was a bargain as I now know my car is spot on. I would recommend using these guys if in London or surrounding counties Daniel

There is an obvious distinction between suggesting a service or source of parts in response to a genuine request for help from a long standing member, and a 'recommendation' out of the blue as a first post.

I too tend to be cynical in my old age.

I must admit that the thing that Honda has always got right is the customer experience - when I was trying to choose which car I wanted in 2005/6 (when I eventually went for a 1.6p Mazda3 TS2 mk1), both the Honda Jazz (ok to drive [far better than my old K11 Micra] and very practical) and 3dr Civic (nice to drive) were on my list as well - I actually preferred the looks of that Civic (especially the 1.6 Sport [I couldn't quite afford the Type R due to the high insurance premium at the time]), and the sales team at the dealership were excellent - very accomodating and helpful without being pushy, and I have yet to come acorss a Honda owner who isn't satisfied with the post-sales experience.

What swayed it for me was that a) the super deal I got on my Mazda (I was increadibly lucky to get it brand new for £10,300 at Motorpoint [times of oversupply] given the next cheapest [broker] was £11,400 for TS model) compared to the Hondas (cheapest was £11,300 for the lowest spec Jazz 1.4 [little or no discounts on offer], similar with the Civic 1.6 Sport at £14k+) and that my local dealer (where I would have it serviced) was both well-regarded and a multi-dealer site that also included a Honda dealership. I've probably been quite lucky to get a good dealer experience, given I've read some Mazda dealerships are less than satisfactory, and that Mazda UK aren't so well regarded as Honda and Toyota....

My local MoT station tell me that they have noticed that any fairly recent VW group vehicle being tested for MoT emissions always fails to rev beyond 2500 rpm when the test calls for the engine to be taken up to its maximum revs (4500 rpm) for a period. This indicates that VW have used some means of preventing the proper testing of the engines for MoT purposes. Surely some action should be taken by the Ministry of Transport against VW group for this obvious cheat against the rules governing the correct levels of Road Tax levied upon motor vehicle using British roads. Like any lab rat knows life outside cage is not the same. The reason we dont get the CO2 output as per the tests is that know drives the virtual route in the weather conditions and driving style of the test simple.

It's not cheating it's a bad test. VW on the other hand that statement is not true as you cant ever got the CO2 output by driving the virtual route. Simple!...

Hello my learned friends. This one has me puzzled and needs fixing. I have had the car for 6 years daily use and a new problem has arisen. The car went off the road for the summer while I was lucky enough to enjoy a soft top. The car came out of the garage a couple of weeks ago for its M.O.T. which it passed with flying colours. What is happening now is that there is a loud hum(vibration) between 2200rpm and 2500 rpm. Outside of these engine speeds all is well. The noise doesn't slowly rise and fall it just comes on and off as if a switch is being operated. Power and economy seem fine. Thank you in anticipation. Best Regards. Read more

As a matter of interest TPS is actually hackable using a bluetooth transmitter receiver on a laptop which can (as far as I know) gain access to the ecu and control the car via TPS

Now how many people would believe that could be done let alone even thought of, but I suppose as with any software hacking, some people have nothing better to do with their lives
