VW group - Diesel emissions testing at MoT - RevRog

My local MoT station tell me that they have noticed that any fairly recent VW group vehicle being tested for MoT emissions always fails to rev beyond 2500 rpm when the test calls for the engine to be taken up to its maximum revs (4500 rpm) for a period. This indicates that VW have used some means of preventing the proper testing of the engines for MoT purposes. Surely some action should be taken by the Ministry of Transport against VW group for this obvious cheat against the rules governing the correct levels of Road Tax levied upon motor vehicle using British roads.

Excessive rpm with no load can be harmful to engines - it only happens normally during MoT test - but it's a situation where the system protects the engine.

It's illegal to use different controls for test than real life, as VW have found in the USA, so their engines shouldn't be required to do anything for MoT test that's prevented in real world driving.

If anything action should be taken against the MoT for such a ludicrous test

Up to a point i don't blame VW limiting the revs of their engines in neutral...my 19 year old petrol MB will only rev to about 3500 in neutral so its not just VW...the Diesel MOT test running the engine up to governed maximum has resulted in broken cam belts and ruined engines.

The test is unfit anyway, how come Mundanos managed to pass the test ok but if you were unfortunate enough to be behind one on full boost you'd be smoked out.

The MOT tester's manual states that if the engine system limits the engine RPM in neutral the vehicle is to be tested as presented.

I first qualified as an MOT tester in 1985, and the diesel smoke test was introduced some time after that. I always felt that the test was flawed, and that it was totally unnecessary to rev the engine right up to its limit. The vehicle would never be driven in such a way, and so why the need to test it that way? It was well documented at the time that certain procedures must be followed, and that we must be aware that engine damage could occur. Everyone knows, or at least should do, that you should not rev any engine up to its limit without any load on it. Many modern cars are set so that it can't be done, and just as well too.

The vehicle would never be driven in such a way

When I had diesels I'd regularly use full throttle up changes, so the engine would be briefly sitting on the limiter at no load.

Nothing broke while I had them.

Full throttle, max revs under load at the limiter is not a problem with a well maintained engine.

Full throttle, max revs no load at the limiter can cause problems and these problems can be very expensive. The fact the engine revs up and slows down much faster than it ever would on the road has been known to snap cam belts especially those past their sell by date.

That is why there is a huge disclaimer from the DVLA and the garage on the wall.

Having once been in the business of testing diesel engines large and small, one of the standard readings that should be taken and logged is maximum unloaded speed or high idle. No harm will come to an engine when doing this as long as the lube oil is up to temperature and all temperatures and flows are normal

If you want to know why VW cheated Google Euro- lex 32011 ,they all cheated and this will explains why , the EEC is lowering the emissions limits to keep more vehicles in the trap

Cameron's and co have introduced infrared scanners that read emissions from individual vehicles and fine them via the ANPR cameras linked to the DVLA DATA BASE

2020 is the target year for emissions /congestion zones to be put in place in every town and city with the councils keeping the money to run local government that's why they are amalgamating ,you have been warned !

Euro 6 was point break for piston engines that why they all cheated !

Do you have any evidence to support that statement ?

Like any lab rat knows life outside cage is not the same. The reason we dont get the CO2 output as per the tests is that know drives the virtual route in the weather conditions and driving style of the test simple.

It's not cheating it's a bad test. VW on the other hand that statement is not true as you cant ever got the CO2 output by driving the virtual route. Simple!
