I see the former Labour 'Science Minister' is now saying that pushing people towards diesels with taxation was a mistake (duh really)
His proposal is a hilarious repeat of their own mistake - proposing to offer scrappage on diesels to push them into electric/hybrid cars.... Read more
To decide on a new car I'm first looking at interior size - specifically boot space. Then I'll look at everything else. I want to know luggage capacity seats up and seats down. And how long an item (like a piece of furniture) can I slide into the boot with seats down so the max dimensions of the boot.
But can I find the details? Aargh, apparently not without downloading each and every brochure. Even looking at classes of cars is not a great help as the boundaries are blurred in some ways... Read more

Hi,
I had an at fault accident at the weekend and want to settle privately. I wanted to get something signed before handing over the money. Does any one have any experience or advice using Accident Waiver and Release of Liability forms?... Read more
I'm pretty certain all accidents/collisions/damage have to be reported to your insurance company, whether a claim is made or not.
There has to be a cutoff point. If I scrape my gatepost when driving home, I can choose to ignore the damage or ask my local bodyshop to repair. I would never consider telling my insurers - there's no point as I would not claim, to avoid affecting my premium or NCD.
Does the VW emissions issue affect annual car tax. The 2 litre VW diesel is rated at 119g/km, the tax break from £30 per annum to £110 per annum is 121g/km. Strangely my Chevrolet Captiva, which also has a 2 litre diesel, is rated at 225g/km, the tax break from £290 to £490 is 226g/km. Looks to me like the objective was not to save the planet. What if a retest shows that even using urea the engine cannot get to existing levels? Will the tax band for each car need changing and if retrospective to 2009 could mean billions of pounds to pay in lost revenue. Who pays that?... Read more
There is already a LEZ charge for vehicles that are not compliant i.e. diesels built before 2002 (so I'm guessing that is Euro 3 or before). The European emissions standards do have limits for NOx, Euro 3 is 0.5 g/km.
Hi
We bought a second hand 2010 reg 2.0 golf tdi second hand in September 2013.
Ever since we've had it we have had intermittent problems with the revs not going above 2500 rpm when driving. Even if you put your foot to the floor it won't rev past 2500. It's actually pretty dangerous as you just cannot accelerate. The glow plugs light comes on at the same time.
Having read a recent question from an mot tester saying that virtually all of the 2010/11/12 golfs he tests do not go past 2500 rpm when tested, I am now beginning to think that maybe the problem we've been having is that the defeat software is cutting in in normal road driving? There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when we have the problem with the car. 95% of the time we drive and the car is fine and we can use the whole rev range. But my girlfriend who normally
drives it and has experienced it the most has started to get a feel for when it happens Read more
We should stick to the old ways - "Sir, I respectfully disagree with you in the strongest terms and I challenge you to a duel!" <proverbially slaps their face with my driving glove> :-)

I have a 54 mondeo estate 2.0 which I am looking to change. How does the 9-3 or even the 9-5 compare to the mondep particularly in terms of driving feel, maintenance costs and handling in the snow/ice ?...
Female friend rented a Hyundai i20 for a few days and we met up with her yesterday. We parked near each other, spent several hours in a restaurant and at the beach (we are currently overseas) and returned to the cars.
Key goes in the barrel but will not turn. She is not stupid so tries unlocking the steering lock, but clearly that is not locked. She tries shifting the gear selector (its an auto) back and forth - no problem out of Park all the way to D and 2 etc etc. Everything works. Takes the key out and puts it in several times - no effect. Gets out of the car, locks it, gets back in - no effect. I try all the same things. Nothing works, key will not turn. Then we notice the central display is lit up...strange?? So ring the rental compand after only a few minutes they say they will replace the car - we will be with you within three hours. ... Read more
A recently purchased 2009 Honda CR-V is just the car for me at present but the sheer din from the tyres at motorway speeds is very disappointing. The car is shod with three Haida 225/65R17 102H and one on the rear nearside which is a Continental 225/65R17 102T M+S.
This is a bad mix anyway I suspect but can any one suggest a quieter tyre please or do I turn up the radio ?... Read more
I've had two CRV CTIDs, a 2006 fitted with Goodyear Wranglers and a 2009 which always had Continental M+S fitted (probably the cheapest for the lease company). Neither of them suffered from tyre related noise except on some concrete surfaced roads (sections of M1 passed Leeds) and grooved tarmac, but imagine this affects all car/tyre combinations. The Continetals lasted approx 30,000 miles.
Cheers,...

Hybrids stand more chance of getting more popular, all electric is a long way off, imo, mainly because of charging and distance they can travel, also too many on charge at once will kill the grid
Electric companies are saying they may need power cuts in winter as it is, so I doubt grid will take thousands of electric cars charging as well
