Volkswagen Golf - 2010 Golf affected by defeat software in normal - graham1981
Hi

We bought a second hand 2010 reg 2.0 golf tdi second hand in September 2013.

Ever since we've had it we have had intermittent problems with the revs not going above 2500 rpm when driving. Even if you put your foot to the floor it won't rev past 2500. It's actually pretty dangerous as you just cannot accelerate. The glow plugs light comes on at the same time.

Having read a recent question from an mot tester saying that virtually all of the 2010/11/12 golfs he tests do not go past 2500 rpm when tested, I am now beginning to think that maybe the problem we've been having is that the defeat software is cutting in in normal road driving? There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when we have the problem with the car. 95% of the time we drive and the car is fine and we can use the whole rev range. But my girlfriend who normally
drives it and has experienced it the most has started to get a feel for when it happens

She started to get a feel for when it happens and it seemed to be that whenever the first thing you did was reverse then the problem appeared. But never when you first start the car up in the morning. Eg you start the car, drive to the shops, park and then when the first action you take upon returning to the car is to reverse then the problem appears. Often when you turn the engine on and off the revs are then fine again.

If this problem has been caused by the defeat software then it's even more of a disgrace than the original scandal because at times it has been extremely dangerous to be driving along and not be able to accelerate at all.

So, you've had this car for 2 years. And this problem has been there ever since you've had the car.

Ever thought about taking it into a garage for them to see if they can diagnose the problem ? Or were you just going to wait forever and see if a recall was made, by some chance ?

You actually say that it's "pretty dangerous" in your first post, and "extremely dengerous" in your second post. But you've been willing to just carry on blithely ignorant of the fault for the last 2 years, or at least to let your girlfriend carry on driving an 'extremely dangerous' car for those 2 years.

Its been into the garage twice and neither time could they diagnose the problem. Ive had arguments with garages who say when they drive it theres nothing wrong and i must be mistaken. It was only when the problem happened to me when i was driving it that i actually believed that it was a genuine problem.

Obviously im the criminal for carrying on driving a dangerous car and not Volkswagen for providing me with one.

Here is the quote from the MOT Tester:

"I am an MoT tester and only this week I tested a 2010 Golf 2.0 TDI 2.0. When it came to the emissions test like nearly all Golf that are 2010 2011 2012 registered, it would not rev past 2500 revs even with my foot down to the floor. Surely VOSA must have been aware that these cars were cheating the diesel opacity test a long time ago"

Obviously considering this is the problem we have been having occasionally whilst driving the car in normal conditions then it made me very curious. It could be an unrelated problem and i hope it is, although 2 garages have told us they can find nothing wrong. Short of taking the car off the road or selling it what was i supposed to do?

VW need to come out and say exactly how the cars performed when they knew they were being tested. Was it just urea injected into the exhaust system or were revs restricted too?

You have absolutely NO evidence that VW have provided you with a 'dangerous vehicle'.

In addition, just because ONE person has reported cars not going above 2.5k rpm in the MOT test, and has wondered (note, ONLY wondered) IF it MIGHT be related to the cheat software, does not mean your car MUST BE affected by the same cheat software in normal driving conditions. When you compare that report from a single MOT tester to the millions of VAG diesels which are going to be recalled, your supposition and extrapolation really does start to look ridiculous.

Taking it into a garage when they've failed to diagnose the fault previously. There's a saying about doing the same thing repeatedly, and expecting different results ...

Might I suggest a different garage, preferably a diesel specialist ? First steps being to change fuel filter (if it hasn't been done recently) and getting it hooked up to a proper diagnostic machine.

Are you the resident troll round here Rob? dear oh dear. Or do you hold VW shares? bad luck if so.

I took it into different garages quite clearly. I didnt ring one garage and say "hey you know that problem you couldnt diagnose 3 months ago, well its still happening so could you please try and diagnose it this time"

2 separate garages couldnt find fault with it. The fuel filter was changed and still the problem would appear. And ive read on other forums of independent garages saying VW cars dont rev past a certain level in the emissions tests. There is something worth investigating here certainly.

Once again, people finding that the cars won't rev past 2.5k DURING THE TESTS - and it possibly (NOTE : possibly) being due to the cheat software - means absolutely nothing DURING NORMAL DRIVING.

I really don't know how to put it any more clearly than that.

The problem here is that you've decided that VW are to blame, and have closed your mind to any alternative. And, as I was always told, a closed mind goes nowhere.

Revs limited to 2500rpm sounds a bit like limp home mode. No codes logged?

Just in case - check your brake lights are working - a faulty switch causes havoc!

Let's keep the advice polite and constructive please. Welcome to the forum, Graham.

I think you've being fobbed off if the dealer says nothing is wrong. I do agree with Rob that you should get another opinion: probably the best would be an independent VW specialist who has the correct diagnostic equipment. This should be able to spot somethiong even if it's happening only 5 % of the time.

The VW "test mode" seems, according to what I have read, to be linked to no steering input being received by a sensor (one comment was that a tuner running a dyno knew that you needed to wiggle the steering to get it to rev beyond 2500 rpm). An intemittent sensor fault might be the cause here.

I guess vauxhall must be in on the scam too, I have a diesel Movano on the drive right now and guess what........that wont rev past 2.5krpm when stationary either.

PS.....I think its normal with a lot of modern diesels regardless of who makes them.

Used the same procedure with my old SDI 1.9 Gof when it failed its first smoke test on emissions.

Just screwed down the revs on the fuel pump and hey presto it passed OK. Then after the test reajusted the pump so I could drive the car normally.

But I understand that the car manufacturers have delegated authority from EC governments to test their own vehicles for emissions. So the whole process is carried out under lab conditions on the manufacturers premises to gain the outcome they require.

But as Clarkson said in his Sunday Times column. "I have bought a Golf recently. Its safe , reliable well bulit and I don't care a s..t what spews out of the exhaust

Strangly enough it seams to have been noted by many that a stationy 2.0TDI does not rev above 2500rpm.

The reason being unkown but it does not seam a bad idea, not heard of any while being driven doing the same

I used to drive one of them and noticed the revs were restricted when reverse was selected.

Stop the driver from breathing too much of his own NOx. Very thoughtful.

I think the rev limiting feature is intended as a safety measure.

Think about it........ If you were to drop the clutch at high revs all that torque applied instantly may well break something in the d*****ine.

Thats "drive-line"

Is `rivel` a new swear word I dont know about yet? I will check with grandson #1 later.

No, it's 'd r i v e l' that the swear filter objects to. Inserted to try to discourage people from being unnecessarily rude about others' posts!

We should stick to the old ways - "Sir, I respectfully disagree with you in the strongest terms and I challenge you to a duel!" <proverbially slaps their face with my driving glove> :-)
