For a few months now, I've had an intermittent problem with black smoke from the exhaust coupled with a reduction in power. Recently it's become less intermittent! Motorway driving is fine as even with the problem happening, I can gradually get the car up to 60mph, put it in cruise control and gently get home. However come off the motorway and try to get up and down steeper hills, and it really struggles. My local garage (here in France, and NOT a Hyundai dealer), did a diagnostic test and identified a "problem" with the Air Mass Sensor - so we replaced it. All was well for a couple of weeks then the problem came back. Garage said new diagnostics test showed "No Faults". They suggested perhaps a problem with dirt in the fuel (diesel, by the way). This weekend, I changed the air filter and the fuel filter under the bonnet and, although I did a 100 mile round trip on the motorway yesterday with no problem, today the problem has reared its ugly head once again.

I do not have the handbook and was wondering what tyre sizes should be fitted to this car, and if mine are standard / ok ?... Read more
There are plenty of all-season tyres on the market which probably aren't quite as good as winter tyres in extreme situations, but will cope with snow and ice where the road is passable.
Everyone has their favourites: I have had very good experience with Kleber Quadraxers, which are quite a bit cheaper than the so-called premium makes.

Hi everyone I'm having a hard time choosing a next workhorse with negative feedbacks about diesel cars manufactured since 2009 due to its DPF while I'm running more than 25000 a year mostly town driving, I'm not sure if petrol will be a good idea. I'm driving a 1.9 passat with 5 speed at the moment and it never lets me down. I only have 7000 budget for a used car but it has to be atleast 7 years old. I am thinking between avensis 1.8 petrol or e class, c class 2.1 and it has to be manual. Thanks for your time, all advice will be considered for my next step... Read more
There's a lot of 1.8 Valvematic avensis' up here.
Interestingly, seen a few civic taxis which makes sense considering the reliability, economy and the amount of room inside.

>Premium badge cars don't actually last any longer than others - they just look good and have a better image.
Thts not really true. While your correct may of the engine gearbox etc are the same. The body panels use thicker metal. Much better quality paint and long life components make them more durable....

Speed cameras do have some sort of mass sensor to monitor LGVs, vans and trailers which have lower speed limits than cars so may trigger at less than the car's speed limit.
