Tarnish

My wife and I are the "lucky" owners of a 2006 Focus C-MAX 1.6 TDCi automatic which suffered a gearbox failure last Thursday with only a little over 51000 miles on the clock. We purchased the car back in October last year for a little under £5000. We've both been reading with disbelief the experiences of other people and the lack of customer care from Ford.

Clearly the refurbished gearbox option is a non starter given the prices that are being spoken of, but it is a crying shame to have to euthanise a car that should have many more miles left in it.

In conversation with my father in law over the matter he wondered if it would be possible to fit the transmission AND engine from a non CVT C-MAX? I would imagine even if technically possible such an undertaking couldn't be taken lightly, I have visions of there being all sorts of issues with the engine management system that without the diagnostic kit could prove insurmountable. Does anyone here have any idea if such a retrofit is technically possible or simply A Bridge Too Far? Read more

I was today talking to a gentleman who'd just had to buy two new tyres and alloys for his Mercedes C-Class. The tyres are low profile Continentals. Total cost was £1500. The tyres were £450 each! Jaw dropping! Read more

"Well, if you were still recovering from a serious illness from which recovery would never be back to normal, your wife had died earlier this year and your dog, your only connection with your wife, had just died, you'd probably have a different mindset. I know this guy, as stated earlier, he is NOT lazy or dumb."

Seem to remember this has been asked before.... Read more

I have mudflaps as standard on my SUV but they only keep about 6" of the sill clean - you really need the flexible type that almost touch the ground to do any real good.

Looking for a used car with low cabin noise - Lexus IS250SE and Audi A4 2.0 petrol come to mind as good examples.

Current car is Mercedes C250 CDI Bluemotion. Its my second in a row, and never again.... Read more

So that's nearly 40 years now that we've been looking for a worthy successor to the Triumph Dolomite!

Actually the two mentioned by Kempsey Fox - Lexus and petrol Audi - are probably the nearest we've got to the ideal - decent performance with comfort and without all the pseudo-sporty bling....

Is there a fault with my car? I find I have to almost push my foot through the floor to get full throttle and it makes the car very tiring to drive. If I do 30 miles on mixed dual carriageways with loads of roaundabouts my foot actually hurts after pressing the pedal so hard. At half throttle it feels as though there is an extra set of springs that I have to press through to get the throttle open.

I've ask two Honda garages if they can adjust the throttle cable or where full throttle occurs but they will not help, just offered to look at it for £40. Is there something wrong with the electronics that can be fixed or a part replaced? The car is still under guarantee.... Read more

Best to go Japanese: depending on the size you want, Toyota for example have the Verso, RAV-4 and Landcruiser (at least they do in the UK - models and names may be different in Portugal).
