Hi there

I live in Yorkshire and have a 30 min commute to work. We get a fair amount of snow.... Read more

Automated manuals (probably the usual suspect twin clutch boxes too) are more difficult, the well known on/off swich clutch engagement during tight manoevers makes itself known when trying to get a smooth start in slippery conditions.

My SLK is coming up to 3 years old and MB have offered me a 1 year extended warranty for £428 (annual payment) or £45.58 per month. As it's a diesel engine I don't want to suffer from a huge cost (although I always let the engine warm up fully and it's serviced on the dot by MB and 99.9% of journeys are 50 miles plus) or anything else going wrong.

The warranty looks to be pretty comprehensive as follows:-... Read more

Glowplugs are specifically excluded on the list you initially gave ? So it's a bit of a moot point.

'Service items which require periodic replacement'. You might want to check if the DPF is viewed as requiring 'periodic replacement'....

I posted on here a while ago about this car that I had bought and discovered that the previous owner had conveniently forgotten to tell me that one of the glow plugs had been snapped off in the head. Today I have finally got round to replacing the three remaining and have tested the ones that have come out and they all glow nicely. The cold start issue remains. My feeling is that no power is getting to the plugs. When the key is turned to IGN I no longer get the glow plug symbol for a few seconds. (I did when I first got the car even though its always been a pig to start from cold). According to the Haynes manual the glow plugs on the turbo models are controlled by the injection system ecu. Could that be at fault?

Thanks in anticipation of any help or advice! Read more

Railroad.

Not common rail or hdi on these, but electronic pump.

Even so they're still direct injection, and should not need glow plugs for cold starting. In fact they don't even switch on for preheating unless the outside air is less than 2 degrees celcius. Their primary purpose is for noise and emission reduction during cold running.

Looking to possibly buy one of these to replace my 1.6 mk2 (100bhp). I was getting an overall indicated average of 34mpg from mine. It was just too underpowered and a nightmare for overtaking. Fifth gear was also just too low geared for easy motorway cruising. I realise the 2.0 will be even worse on fuel/tax, but I just can't risk the diesel! I wish I could test drive one to see the power difference, but I more than likely have to travel out of Cornwall to find one. Read more

Sadly the 1.6 100bhp engines are rather sluggish. Look at a 1.8 engine upwards.

Alternatively the MK3 1.6 125bhp has much better MPG and is very lively. Introduced at the same is the 1.0 also 125bhp another very lively with good MPG....

Hi folks. Yesterday the rear suspension raised fully up,and wouldn't come down again. The AA guy notices the load compensated valve was disconnected. He put it back on,and tied a couple of cable ties on it,to stop it coming back off. The problem today is ,although its rising up and down,at normal setting, it seems too high. Not as high as before, but still huge gaps between wheel and body. Lowering it one down,is too low. Any suggestions on getting it back to original hight? Cheers Read more

I haven't had any problems with them on the C5 although I did on the XMs, on those the height corrector could get stiff due to corrosion and lack of lubrication but I don't know if the C5 ones are the same.

The only way of altering the height as far as I know is by rotating the clamps on the anti roll bars, but as these have usually rusted solid they shouldn't have moved unless unless someone has altered them. There may be a small ammount of electronic adjustment but you will need to find someone with a Lexia to determine that.

I have just received an astronomical quote from RAC for renewal. Last year I negotiated it down but am somewhat fed up of this (e.g. personal cover quoted instead of car cover)

The AA give a much better price.... Read more

Hello, two weeks ago I changed my LH cv joint in the same time I replaced the drive shaft seal

But today I noticed gearbox oil after leaving my parking space. I'm pretty sure I did not replace the seal correctly, I pushed it too far or not enough idk, i'm confused, should I push the seal or not? please help me I don't want to redo this job and fail again

Thanks Read more

You should always tap it in until you hear a change in note which means it has 'homed in'. Use a socket as close in size to the seal as possible and tap it gently.

Hi, i am looking for an estate for a family, 3 kids but would only have 3 in occasionally as one is a moody teen. I have upto £6000 to spend i am handy on the tools so i can do alot of repairs my self, within reason. I would prefer petrol because i only do 10000 miles a year and have already had a bad run with tdi. I would prefer a auto but not essential, im heading towards 50 so would like some luxury that i have never had. Any ideas what to get? Thanks for your help. Read more

BMW 5 series super value for what you get a few issues with low running costs.

SUV offer no more room over an estate IMHO and do slow you down!
