If the key fob has been opened, to change batteries, or otherwise, then check the immobiliser transponder chip, which is a small grey or black block approx 3 x 4 x 8mm is still there. It sits in the plastic fob housing near the key blade. It often falls out if the fob is opened.
If you have a spare key use that.
This question would apply to any car from the VAG group with the DSG gearbox.
In operation when one gear is selected and engaged ie clutch closed, a second gear is also engaged in readiness but with its corresponding clutch disengaged ie held open.... Read more
As above looking at the PDF it looks like that neither clutch would engage. Amazing complex far more so I imaged and an old style auto.
I have a discrete TomTom XL satnav that is several years old and has never been updated.
As I take this with me to use in hire cars when I go to Europe on business or holdays, I thought it was about time the maps were updated, (as for one, there is the rather unfortunate error on the Milan - Verona motoway, where the exit for Lake Garda DOES NOT actually exist)!... Read more

ESP warning light on and diagnostics show fault 493 ESP Sensor (G419) no signal/communication. My car has a separate ESP sensor. Booked car into an independent VAG specialist which seems to be highly recommended and they identified problem as electrical malfunction in rear wheel sensor so replaced both rear hubs and speed sensors, cost £550. They showed me a very damaged speed sensor with the tip worn away exposing the encased wiring saying that rust from the abs rotor caused that. Although only one side had the problem they replaced both sides. I was then informed that this would have ‘knocked out’ (shorted) the ESP sensor and once this was replaced everything should be OK. Quoted over £926 for fitting new ESP sensor unit. Surprise, surprise when this was fitted, fault still there and now they want to replace the ABS controller unit. To keep costs down they have suggested that I get a second hand unit and they will fit it quoting about 4 hours labour charge. I am a pensioner and feel I am being ‘strung’ along and used as a cash tree. Can anybody offer any knowledgeable advice as to the reasonability of what has happened so far and if they think it takes 4 hours to fit the ABS controller unit. Many thanks and much appreciated... Many thanks for all the replies.
Car now fixed, replaced the ABS ECU unit, recoded and everything fine now. Thinking about getting the old one re-manufactured and keep as a standby just incase.

I, like most of us, receive goods protected by bubblewrap. I have never thrown such material away and now have at least four very large plastic sacks in my loft full of the stuff!
It would be a crime to throw it all away.... Read more
Thanks. I will bear that in mind next time I am in a shopping mall.

Insurance companies assessment of risk is generally accurate but perverse - my son lives a few streets away so a different post code but the claims records of our neighbours affects our premiums differently
