Hi

My gf has an Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 Turbo and according to the dealer she purchased the vehicle from (JCT 600) it is due a service. The issue is would it be a part or full service, that is required? The Alfa is on a '11' plate and has covered just over 28'000 miles. The vehicle was last serviced at 25'758 on 2nd May 2014 and prior service was undertaken on 27th May 2012 @ 20,200 miles at that stage. The service history document doesn't state which service is required either. What service would you recommend undertaking, full or part. The vehicle only covers around 4,000 miles per annum.

Thanks. Read more

Hi gordonbennet

Have decided give the car a full service at a garage I know and trust, the car past its MOT in May 2015 and has still got 3 months warranty left as it was sold with a 1 year policy. Thanks for your help!...

When I bought my car some 9 years ago now, the temperature gauge worked intermittently. The pcb was found to be damaged!. (Presumeably by a previous owner). Purchased and fitted a cluster from Ebay, everything worked fine, save the odometer!! (keeps stopping).

Would really like to refit correct cluster, as the odometer is getting very annoying to cope with, and this cluster has had a hard life, by the look of things. To this end I Recently had the original cluster repaired and tested (everything worked correctly) by ECU testing ,and refitted to the car. Now I find that the Temp and Fuel gauges work but do not show the correct readings (both to Low). Everything else is fine. Only the temp gauge was faulty when the cluster was originally removed.... Fuel and temp gauge faults on these are very common, and to somebody that knows what they are doing, usually a very simple fix with no parts required. These use a very basic hard printed circuit with very little electronics.Infact the 2 gauges are driven by a voltage regulator similar to what you would find in an 80s Golf. The most common issue is poor connections between the gauges and the pcb.Dismantling the circuit board ,and cleaning the contacts with a small file (where the gauges screw onto the pcb),then re assemble will do the trick.Fortunately all the gauges on the pcb are removeable and can be swapped around.

Thank you for this advice, I will let my technician know when we come to have another go with this.

I do get disappointed when people who should know better use incorrect words or 'sayings' and in doing so perpetuate the mistake. There is now, because of constant misuse, an entry in the newer dictionaries of:

Orientated. There is no such word. The word is Oriented. From the noun Orient: to establish ones' position. However the inability to correct the misuse has led to it being included in an official dictionary. This is of course how English has evolved over the centuries with misuse becoming so common that it enters the vernacular and becomes accepted. This version was used by a very venerable writer in an article in the Daily Telegraph. When I pointed out his error he accepted my point and told me about it being accepted now as common English. Quite interesting. It is easy to see how this happens, probably mishearing or misunderstanding.... Read more

Railroad.

Nonetheless it's a fact that 75% of all engine wear occurs in the first five miles of every journey. It's also true that the best performing engines are those that clock up a lot of miles very quickly. That's because they're always running at optimum efficiency. In 35 years that I've been working on cars those that only ever do short runs never perform well.

Low mileage isn't the biggest problem, its regular short journeys especially in traffic.

If you only covered 100 miles a week but that was two journeys on the open road of 50 miles apiece Diesel would be perfect....
