My Santa Fe 2007 2.2 diesel automatic, 70k miles broke down this weekend with what seems like a transmission failure. Towed to the local Hyundai dealer, and they have told me that I need a full new autobox, priced £5000 all in! I challenged and asked what was wrong with the 'box and whether it could be repaired - they said that they send the whole thing off to a specialist and they do the analysis and repair if possible. It's £216 to send off to the specialist, which is a no-brainer given the alternative of just saying yes to a new one at £5000, but can anyone provide advice?
- is an autobox failure common on these models (I hadn't heard of one)? car has a tow bar, so might have done some heavy towing before I owned it, but even so...... Read more
AFAIK spring rate is unrelated to damper rate, and vice versa - although both affect roll rate as does the anti-roll bar rate.

Whilst it appears to be a feature on many a German car, the stinginess of their equipment across the range is particularly apparent on the Golf - no climate controlled A/C as standard except on the GTi or R. Most equivalent models from other makes have that feature on at least one model below the 'sports' models in their ranges (e.g. the GT and Match models), wherby customers don't have to fork out another £500+ to 'upgrade' from standard A/C on an already expensive car.
A shame, as I quite like the latest Golf 1.4 TSi GT 3-door, getting back to the original Golf GTi without the huge insurance outlay of the current model. Read more
A shame really, as most second-hand models I was looking at (for reference) for the Golf (other than the GTi and R) only had the lower-spec standard A/C, and not climate controlled A/C, hence why (unless I was very lucky to find a GT or Match with the exact spec I wanted) I was thinking only brand new was my only option and was miffed at the high extra cost on an already above-average price.
I wouldn't mind buying a pre-reg (effectively that's what my Mazda is when I bought it from Motorpoint in 2006 [17 miles on the clock]) if the spec and price was right. Maybe I'll be lucky.
Can anyone tell me why my Jimny span out of control as I took a bend.

Cars like this are innately dangerous in today's terms. Generally, with decent tyres at the right pressure, it's possible to drive most modern cars normally without special attention to road conditions and not feel a skid from one year to the next.
Contrast with 1960s-70s cars that many of us started with - it was second nature to tip-toe in the wet, and it was an unusual driver who had not accidentally explored the limits on occasion. ...
I have owned a Jaguar XE 180 Prestige automatic and am very pleased with it. So far I have put on 11,000 in just over a year. Few faults, excellent ride, road holding and performance. Read more
Your video of the Honda CR-V is unavailable.
I recently enquired about a possible update for my 14 reg. CR-V EX navigation system. I was appalled to find a disc would cost me £170. Can I get an update anywhere for a reasonable sum please ?

Ok - its the Daily Mail, but the pictures prove that the plastics are actually melting and dripping onto the floor-another reason not to buy a Renault.

Don't forget guys that its unlikely to be the air temperature quoted in news/weather reports (in the shade) that makes the difference, but the strength of the sun, which could mean the effective temperature of a surface in direct sunlight may be significantly higher than the air temperature.
Its the same reason why car components started melting and people were burnt in central London in the area adjacent to the 'Walkie-Talkie' building in the recent past - the direct sunlight was (in that case) concentrated onto a small area at certain times of the day in late summer/early autumn due to the unfortunate (but known - it had hapened before with another building abroad designed by the same architect) combination of sun position and shape of the building acting like a focusing lens....

I suggest that you contact/go to a Member of the Federation of Automatic Transmission Engineers (as I have done), who are the auto gearbox experts and can properly diagnose the problem and advise on a solution. These businesses understand auto transmission problems much better than main dealers who only come across them occasionally.

A few weeks ago I noticed my car was leaking on the driver's side from around the visor area. I looked over and noticed the passenger ceiling was also wet in a slightly different place and not dripping.... Read more
I've come across the windscreen surround causing a leak at the top corners on these. It seems it can't cope with the bend as it gets older.
Suggest the only cure is to have the windscreen removed and re-fitted.
