So after 67,000 I needed new front discs & pads on the DS5. When I turned up at the garage they had the wrong set, quickly rectified so no problem, however it turned out that because I'd specced 18" wheels instead of the standard 17" the brakes had been up sized as well. I've always found the brakes on the DS superb and they do fill the wheel but assume the standard brakes also to be well up to the job. My question is do most manufacturers do this (I do see a lot of cars with big wheels and disproportionately small discs) and if so is it for cosmetic reasons. Read more

On the Seat Leon TSI 1.2 and 1.4 regardless of trim (S, SE, FR) you get the same brakes despite the different trims having 15", 16" or 17" wheels. Move up to the 1.8 TSI and you get bigger brakes.

From memory on the BMW 1 series circa 2008 you got exactly the same brakes regardless of engine and trim unless you bought the 123i M Sport which did have bigger brakes meaning you were restricted on winter tyre/wheel sizes.

Last Tuesday I drove c450 miles in Mercedes Sprinter 313 cdi, fully loaded and with an average driving speed of 63mph it delivered 29.7mpg. It was very comfy, quiet and handled well. Are all vans this good now? Read more

Went to test drive a 12 plate Toyota Hi Lux and found it so bouncy and tiring to drive. Got back in my Transit and found it so comfortable in comparison. Is the Navara more comfortable than the Hi Lux ?

You can buy push fit fuel line connectors for nylon fuel pipe.

I have seen these for air systems, they use them all the time on commercial vehicles, wasn't aware they did them for fuel, If so they are by far the easiest way to repair damaged plastic / nylon hoses....

In my experience batteries are much better now than years ago. When I bought Ford cars the battery only used to last about 13 months and now my wife's Golf is over 7 years old with the original battery.

My John Deere tractor is 11 years old and is still on it's original battery....

My 2011 Yeti EPC warning light came on, engine running roughly and went into emergency programme which allows travel at 30mph only. Skoda dealer checked and found a failure of plug lead 3. Quote for fitting new leads, £300 for Skoda parts, £200 for alternative manufacturer, supplied by Skoda Garage. Took the cheaper option. Noted that the new leads are now fitted with extra sheathing for heat protection. Has this been recognised as a problem by Skoda, and therefore should I ask for some refund. Read more

You have been robbed. Plug leads for your car are under £40 a set at Euro Car Parts and even though fitting then to some cars can be awkward you could DIY in a couple of hours max.

Have they got big windows, they saw you coming....

Hi guys

Not sure if this has been asked before, but just wondering, is there any second hand car options out there that look like they would cost a lot of money to run, but are surprisingly cheap? Just wondering, as I wouldn't want to dismiss any cars because I assume they are too expensive to run. E.g. nice BMW's, 4x4's etc. Not sure if this makes sense or is a daft question, but thought i'd ask :p... Read more

The golden age for such cars, 80's and 90's designs are getting long in the tooth now, but they can still be found if you search diligently.

One of the last of the Lexus LS400's, GS300's or IS200/300, would be a fair bet, as would a Toyota Camry, obviously they need to have been cared for and not fallen into neglectful or chavvy hands as they approach banger status.

Hi folks,

I am new to this forum, having only bough my Yeti in April. I have come on to get advice on my 2010 Yeti, which has developed rust in all four doors. Initially, Skoda said it was the problem of the dealer that sold the car to me, which I challenged. After a period of providing numerous photos, they agreed that rust was present and they would have the problem fixed. Skoda then asked me to book in the car with a Skoda authorised bodyshop, and they will have it taken care of. I then booked the car in with Volkswagen, who immediately informed me that the car required four new doors, and requested them from Skoda, whose Technical department declined, saying that a S3 repair was sufficient. Volkswagen completley disagreed with what Skoda said, and informed me that they would back me 100% in pursuing new doors from Skoda. In addition to this, I took the car to get an opinion from two bodyshops in the company that I work, and both experienced bodywork engineers completely backed what Volkswagen said.
Volkswagen have basically said that Skoda want treatment applied to the rust and new paint putting over the top, which having researched thoroughly, will not stop the rust, and it will return within 6-8 months.
The problem I have is that this has taken almost five months to get to this stage, with the car in Volkswagen, awaiting a final decision, and I don't want to be going through this every 6-8 months when the car has a warranty.
This is my first Skoda, having had Fords and Nissan's before, and though I love my new car, this has been, and still is, a complete nightmare.
Isn't the whole point of manufacturers issuing a warranty, that they correct problems? and not just place paper over the cracks? Can anyone provide any help and advice? and how do I get to speak to Technical Experts that make the decisions directly? as the Customer Service representatives say that customers are not allowed to speak to Technical. Thanks in advance. Al Read more

Firstly, any 'additional' warranty over the 3 years one (so, including the 12 year body warranty) can have plenty of conditions - unlike the original 3 year warranty.

Skoda do however say that :...
