Astronomic cost of tyres - Trilogy

I was today talking to a gentleman who'd just had to buy two new tyres and alloys for his Mercedes C-Class. The tyres are low profile Continentals. Total cost was £1500. The tyres were £450 each! Jaw dropping!

I suppose if someone buys a car without researching tyre prices then such things will happen, its quite amazing how many people haven't a clue what servicing and consumables prices they will face when they sign up fort their new car.

I'd beg to differ about astronomical tyre prices, i think that if bought well tyres are cheaper now than they have ever been (thanks to the internet), example my sons new to him BMW 325 estate sits on 225/45 x 17 runflats, checking Tyreleader shows that Pirelli/Continental and similar quality make runflats can be sourced at £70/80 each.

Bought from the dealer in desperation when the car fails the MOT due to wear, or presumably after damage ref the merc above, i have no doubt prices like those would not apply.

GB, he wasn't complaining about the cost. He can afford it. He loves his car. I don't think I've ever paid more than about £70 for a tyre. My W124 tyres cost about the same as my Octaivia's did at £60ish each.

He caught a central traffic island when he swerved to miss a cat. His car is fastidiously maintained.

Understood, i wasn't suggesting he was perturbed by the cost, it was meant as general comment due to some of the posts we see from people scandalised by costs they should have known about before signing up.

Did he miss the cat?..:-)

Neighbour's A6 repmobile on 20 inch rims, the tyres are nudging £200 a piece apparently. Too much for what is basically a family estate car--- but then again the 20 inch rims are pointless too!

I think so. Best I make no further comment about the cat.

I think the price of tyres has actually come down quite a bit. I put this down to the competition of online businesses and the fact that many of them are based in central europe (e.g. Oponeo, Tyreleader etc) and the fact the £ against the Euro is in our favour.

I just purchased 2 tyres from one of the two companies I mentioned above and I was shocked at how little I paid compared to when I last looked at prices for the size and make of tyre (I paid £70 each when 12 months ago the price was around £100 each).

I guess the more 'exotic' sizes will still attract a premium but now seems to be a good time to buy imo.

It's quite likely that tyres have got cheaper for the same reason as fuel - they depend on petrochemicals like so many other things like detergent, tho we don't consume anything like as much of that :-)

Tyres and alloys? Why did he need new wheels?

I'd suggest if he's paid £450 for a tyre on a C class, then he's been shafted by a main dealer.

The internet is a marvellous place, lots of price comparison sites, lots of places that will sell you tyres too. If he's too dumb/lazy to go and look for a decent price, then a MB dealer is going to be all too ready to add on whatever he can.

I posted a thread on tyre prices a couple of weeks ago. Some 'premium' tyres were surprisingly cheap. Some were stupidly expensive.

He's neither dumb, nor lazy.

This site's own Insignia has recently had a new tyre (see 15 August update) at a cost of £307! The article does say they didn't shop around. You're telling me.

I've just been onto MB UK website. It seems the largest you can spec on a C class (the C63S car), is 19" wheels, fitted with 245/35 on the fronts, and 265/35s on the back.

Two minutes of work on blackcircles.com (other tyre websites are available) found me the MO (Mercedes Original, so the 'approved' tyres) as Pirelli P Zero.

£164 fully fitted for a front tyre

£202 for a rear tyre.

That makes £366 total to me, whereas he's paid £450 per tyre. And that's for the worst-case scenario. If he's got 16" or 17" rims on, then the tyres probably shouldn't be much more than £100 a piece.

I don't usually go in for gratuitously rude, but in this case I'll stand by my previous comment of lazy or dumb.

Merc C63 AMG can be 255/30 and is upto 19" still only £200 contisportcontact.

Fully endorse Blackcircles. Used them for a while now and find them very competitive and easy to deal with when making fitting appointments etc.

My 225/45/17 Michelins are about £75 ish fitted. Not bad at all.

I wouldn't fancy a £1500 bill for missing a cat though. However instinct kicks in and we swerve to miss it and hit another, harder object instead. Ouch!

And if he accepted their quote without bargaining, he's a fool.

And if he ordered them without a quote he's a bigger fool.

Seems he has money to burn.

Sorry for being gratuitously outspoken.

My general rule is: never buy tyres through a car dealership - they have (almost always) absolutely no interest in getting the best price, often using a tyre fitter round the corner to do all the work and charging full whack for the privilege.

Obviously if there's going to be a problem getting a car through its MOT due to (say) a damaged-beyond-repair tyre (not badly worn - we owners should've noticed that and done something about it ages ago), then I would ask the dealer if it can be got through the MOT with a temporary fix (enough so you can drive to a reputable tyre dealer), including using the space-saver tyre (not sure if that's legal or not, or if it then has to be retested after the tyre has been properly replaced within X days to prove it has been).

As has been said, there's lots of deals to be had these days.

Trilogy.

While I sympathise with your acquaintance and what he has been through, if his head is in such a bad place, is he really fit to be driving ? Was the accident/near miss down to the cat running out, or down to his head not being in the right place and him reacting slowly ?

"Well, if you were still recovering from a serious illness from which recovery would never be back to normal, your wife had died earlier this year and your dog, your only connection with your wife, had just died, you'd probably have a different mindset. I know this guy, as stated earlier, he is NOT lazy or dumb."

Trilogy, the OP, has asked me to close this thread.

Clearly it pays to shop around - even better to choose a car where there is at least the option of specifying more sensible wheels and tyres. But there was never any need to be rude about Trilogy's friend, who had things on his mind other than trying to get the best price for his tyres.
