Forum Tyres

I've been having a look around for new tyres this evening, as the back tyres on my 325d estate are now down to 4mm.

I usually go to blackcircles as a starting point. Pricing seems very interesting.... Read more

Yes, the tyres I had were rated highly by two owners, but one said they were awful, which was also my experience. That person had a similar car to me i.e. city car. Clearly a larger car will take larger tyres, which changes the area in contact with the road, and the weight, and hence the results.

For years the old Shuttle has been using oil quite regulary - maybe a couple of pints per tankload of petrol. But there's been no black smoke, no 'burning oil' just an occasional slight smell of hot oil when I get out at the end of a run. I wondered today if it might be escaping via the rocker cover. If you look at the picture, www.flickr.com/photos/30658292@N06/? you can see that one of the securing bolts is oily, whereas the others are dry? Could there be a failed washer or gasket under there? I was bumped by a taxi but very little cosmetic damage to rear bumper - just a scratch and paint chipped. I took it to 2 body shops and they both recommended getting new rear impact bar / cross member but i have since removed bumper myself and didnt appear that mechanics had removed it to check behind.

Literally no damage to impact bar, just a tiny dent that is not visible and only obvious if you run your hand along bar.... Read more

It's fine. The only thing that MIGHT be a problem in the future is that the paint may have separated from the cross member, and it might rust sooner in the future. But if the damage is as light as you've said, then I doubt if that would be the case.

Thank you for replying.

On both cars its the fuel pump under the bonnet. I thought I was going crazy today, I was asked several times if id put the wrong fuel in. I knew I didn't but began to doubt myself, so much so that I got the staff at the filling station to check the cctv to clarify and to reprint my receipt, I think they thought I'd escaped from a lunatic asylum....

I have a 10 year old Smart Forfour that has done 63000 miles. When in automatic mode, in 6th gear, travelling at around 60mph, it regularly tries to change down to 5th, hesitates, but then continues in 6th. This is particularly bad in wet weather, when travelling at a similar speed, the automatic and unexpected changing down at speed is quite fierce. Shifting to manual mode will obviously stop this happening. Is there something that can be done? Will a gearbox oil change help, or is it the gearbox on it's way out and in need of an expensive repair? Read more

Good morning!

I'm hoping to generate some excitement (and beta testers!) about an iPhone app I'm currently working on. It's called 'Car Sound Quiz', and as you have probably guessed, it's a trivia app that tests the users' ability to identify a car purely by the sound that its engine makes. To give you a bit of background, I'm a massive petrolhead and have always been a big fan of cars with aurally attractive engines. The Alfa V6s, BMW sixes (S54 in particular), F355 and AMG V8s are all high on my list. As engines become more eco-friendly/turbocharged/downsized, we start to lose this element (BMW's adoption of synthetic sound enhancement does not get my vote!).... Read more

Question, with speaker quality only being so so on even a iphone, will the quality be good enough to tell the difference between engine/exhaust sounds

also would it not have been better to have a visual game say showing an outline of a motor and you have to guess what car it is ...

Put the car details into any oil manufacturers website and it will probably tell you what you need.

My old MX5 (1999) has Vredestein Sportrac 3 on it. I can't fault them, wet or dry.

The engine will not go over 2500 revs without losing power.

Any ideas. Read more

Try disconnecting the MAF sensor, it that improves it that's probably the problem.
