Hi, newbie here, hope someone can help...
Last year I had 2 x pistons replaced due to overheating. Drove away from garage and oil light was flickering occasionally when braking or going around corners (thought this was just faulty electrics or just general age of vehicle). Got it home (200 miles from garage), left it for a while, took it for MOT and oil was coming out of Rocker gasket, since fixed. Now the garage who fixed that (rocker)have said there is excessive crankcase pressure. Rang the original garage and asked if this was covered under warranty (due to engine rebuild) and all they keep saying is that I shouldnt have driven it if the oil light was flickering. Question is - Would low oil pressure lead to an immediate problem of excessive crankcase pressure which wasnt there before they rebored the engine?... Read more
When I got it back from the garage that did the rebuild/re bore of 2 cylinders, there was a huge amount of blue exhaust fumes every time I started the van. The sort that engulfed the van (a bit embarrassing starting up on the street tbh), which didnt happen before the rebuild. The garage also didnt re attach the breather pipe after the rebuild, just left it hanging (one end came off when the van originally overheated) - couldnt understand the reason why they didnt do that

A relative recently purchased a 12 plate I10 1.2 classic with full history, 27,000 miles for 4,300. The only problem so far has been a heavy and stiff clutch. The main dealer replaced the clutch cable which made some improvement. however, they did say it will need a new clutch and the latest retro fit clutch for the I10 is now the same one that went into the old shape I20. They want 450 to do the clutch, but as its still working fine, they will carry on with the current clutch despite it being the pedal being on the heavy side.

2 weeks ago I done a service on my i40 and after the oil change my average mpg has dropped from 55mpg to as little as 38mpg and on the motorway when I was regularly getting as much as 70mpg the car is bairly hitting 60.
I have used the correct oil for my i40 (shell helix c3 5w-30 fully synthetic) After a week of poor MPG I thought perhaps the oil might have been faulty. Off I went to a different supplier for the same oil and still getting poor MPG. Any pointers would be appreciated. ... Read more
Never heard of that. What effect does using the wrong oil have on the engine?
The wrong viscosity can cause increased internal drag as well as affecting hydraulic tappets/lash adjusters which can alter valve timing enough to affect mpg.

I've never worked in the automotive sector, but in general software engineers are terrible when it comes to security/reliability. There is a rush to add features, rather than polish existing ones. And customers buy more features, not less but better features.
Not this customer. I want fewer features not more. I don't want Bluetooth. I switch my phone off when I am driving. I don't want touch screens. I can't operate them without taking my eyes off the road. I certainly don't want a computerised in car entertainment system....
A Friend is in the process of buying a used XF with 2 years of warranty from a jaguar dealer.
Price was ok, and apart from requesting new mats and scuffed alloys being fixed, nothing to worry about, and specifically asked if there were any items that may need to be replaced (service items) before the next service, but asked for details of servicing and condition, and told that as discs were .2 mm above tolerance that was acceptable. Tyre condition good and servicng up to date.... Read more
One Beemer dealer told me in my innocent days that the company (i.e. BMW, not the dealer) was not like VW and Mercedes but was a private company, and owned by the "Quant" family.
I asked if that was 'as in Mary Quant', and was told yes. I now know better - the QUANDT family members own about 45%, the rest is publicly owned....

What has changed?
From now on, after 2 years' residence in e.g. Spain, the holder of an EU licence with long validity (i.e. 5, 10 or 15 years remaining; valid to age 70 etc.) must "renew" (a better word is "validate") their EU licence. This means presenting their home licence and registering it with the authorities. So a UK licence which would normally be valid to age 70 now has a ten year limit of validity in Spain. You get to KEEP your British licence, but it is officially registered in Spain and if you are stopped by the police, it will show on their computer, and your address in Spain is also shown: this makes you 100% registered and road-legal, the same as any Spanish motorist.
When the 10 years are up, you have to do an eyesight and reflex test and "renew". Since you cannot legally declare a UK address on a Spanish licence (or vice-versa) it is then time to swap to a Spanish licence.
If you change address again (e.g. return to the UK), you can revert to your old British licence. The DVLA keep a permanent record of your "old" British licence and you can even request a facsimile copy of it.
