My wife has a Galaxy, but with her having short legs and me having long legs, the drivers seat is moved from as far away from to as close to the steering wheel when we swap driving.

We have noticed that the airbag warning light intermittently comes on sometimes after the seat has been moved. Is there a connection under the drivers seat which is responsible for this - I am hoping it is a loose connection rather than anything sinister to do with the airbag.

Thanks. Read more

Yes, there is a connector. The seat has an occupancy sensor. If the seat isn't occupied, then the airbag is de-activated.

Why have an occupancy sensor for the driver's seat, you may wonder ? Simply put, it's far easier to make the same seat with the same sensors for all models, left and right hand drive. ...

My brake drums were rusty. Having cleaned them and sprayed them with heat resistant paint, am I okay to follow the paint instructions to harden the paint by baking at 160 degrees, or will that warp the drums? Read more

My original Michelin Primacy tyres have done 21,000 mies and need replacing. I have seen alternatives that would save quite a few quid but am curious about the quality and ratings. e.g. on Black Circles the Michelin is £102 and their own brand is £55.

Are there known equals to Michelin and how relevant are the ratings for fuel economy, rain and noise?... Read more

I agree with RobJP, my car came with factory fitted Michelin Primacy. I used to cover about 30k miles per year so changed tyres frequently, every 25K or so. Once they didn't have the Michelin in stock and offered a budget tyre. I foolisly accepted this and regreted it almost immediatley. Road noise and wet handling were the two obvious points I noticed but I also think that braking was affected too. I lasted about 10k through the summer and changed back to Michelin and have not varied since. I use Black Circles and find them very competitive, easy to deal with and very reliable with fitting through a local garage. It is true: buy cheap and you buy twice!

For the driver's seat I need a seat height booster cushion.

I've seen the Halford's "Comfort cushion" which looks high enough but I think I need a wedge-shaped cushion, to raise my back but not my knees.... Read more

You could ask a workshop to fit some spacers/washers between the seat fixings and floor, but it will need more modification if the seat needs to go higher.

This would probably be far more risky than using a cushion. It would put increaed loadings on fastners, seats and the floor and in all liklihood make the seat unstable in an accident....

Looks like the dealer has used a guess-o-meter on this.I would suggest take it somewhere that can give a more accurate diagnosis.A switch can be sourced new or second hand .An ecu is more involved as it is coded to the electronics of the car and I doubt if a s/hand unit can be easily fitted.

I've noticed that a number of new cars have indicators that are all but invisible in daylight, all in the name of "styling", thanks to the almost universal fitment of clear lenses front and rear, requiring amber bulbs or amber interior lenses (BMW held out longest against this trend IIRC) makes a lot of signals hard to see and create an added hazard on the roads. Even 44 ton lorries are falling victim to this fad.
Amber bulbs seem to fade to clear very quickly and some motorists (deliberately or unwittingly) replace expired amber bulbs with clear ones. The Citroën Picasso is quite popular where I live and, strangely, they all seem to have ended up with clear rear indicator bulbs.
The placing of indicators so close to bright DRLs (the Qashqai is one example of many) renders them all but invisible and, at the rear, the adjacent LED brake lights on some cars (Audi Q7, I'm looking at you, with your pseudo-Knight Rider effects!) seem to absorb all the light from the indicators. (Not that Audi drivers are likely to wear the indicator bulbs out in record time...)
And finally - the eensy weensy "auxiliary" indicators mounted on door mirrors are as much use as fairy lights, at least in daylight, and contribute very little to road safety.
Surely it's time to tighten up regulations? Read more

Couldn't agree more, they are difficult to see in certain circumstances which is patently unsafe. No trouble seeing vehicles though with every form of light known to man glaring from every orifice.

Especially the 'boy racers' aroung here. Spot and Fog lights on no matter what the visibility. Just to show they have these 'desirable' extras of course. What use is a whistle unless it is blown?? Usually accompanied by the rear spoiler and power wing to keep the awesome power of that 1.3 Corsa firmly on the tarmac!!!!...

So we are swapping cars again, as the title suggests we have 4k to play with. Need something of a good size while maintaining decent MPG and prefererably a little performance.
I dont mind the VW passat B6 but have read the numerous problems with the engines in the 2L PD variant. My sister has the 2L lump in her car and she has yet to have any issues.
I'm also considering the E60 530D, I have a near mint one near me however I'm concerned of the high maintanance cost.
Does any one have any suggestions or input to the above models? Read more

As has been said by others, really : if you buy a 'premium' brand, then a fair bit of your money is being spent on the badge. Probably not the wisest move when you're on a limited budget.

i recently bought an audi a3 2002 1.9 TDI with no warranty and it drove fine no problems. however when i got to below a quarter of tank of fuel the ESP light came on and at first i thought the wheels where spinning but then i started to lose power and when i hard acclerate the whole car shakes quite bad when in idle it sits rumbling and shaking. i put more fuel in and it stopped. then it happened again when i got to below a quarter again but this time i put more fuel in and it keeps doing it the car used to be quite nippy but now its more like a 1.2 than a 1.9TDI does any one have any ideas on what going on? It's well known that there's a problem of over confidence with some young inexperienced drivers, mostly male - but there's another factor. This youthful over confidence is particularly prevalent if the young driver is also a performance car enthusiast. Such people have a tendency to live in a dangerous 'crossover' world where the distinction between motor sport and motoring on public roads is blurred.
