Had the belts changed, even the pulley as it looked a bit ‘polished’ but my alternator is still very whiney. It’s not too noticeable during the day, but at night when the lights are on, it gets considerably louder, and even worse if you press down on the electric windows. To me, it sounds like it’s being overworked, or even strained. My mechanic said the last thing to do was possibly change it, but there could be other factors as to why it’s being overworked. Any ideas?... Read more
A whiney alternator may not be a bearing or pulley issue.A faulty diode/rectifier can cause the alternator to become electrically unbalanced with one of the three phases not working correctly. The only positive test would be to scope the alternator output and check for an irregular or "noisy" trace.
When taking a driving test the examiner might fail the one being tested if they do something sensible.
Thus it is sometimes necessary to give the examiner what he/she wants to hear then forget the silly parts once the test is passed. Do the BRs know any other things ?... Read more
Some years ago I was behind an HGV who was waiting to turn right into a depot, he was not indicating to turn right but had positioned himself toward the centre of the road to allow traffic behind to pass on the left. Unfortunately there was still not enough room to squeeze through so there was a queue of traffic behind him. A motorcyclist assumed he was part of the queue and not the cause so he overtook a number of cars and then the lorry, just as the lorry turned accross in front of him. Result, the biker went straight into the side of the cab. Had the biker seen a right hand indicator, would he have tried to pass the lorry?
I currently own a 2012 1.8 vmatic avensis estate with 39,000 miles on the clock. I have owned the car for 2 years having previously been a Toyota management car.
Last week whilst driving the clutch began slipping in 4th through to sixth gear. Toyota are of the opinion this is fair wear and tear and is not covered under warranty. They have quoted 900 quid to replace it. I have had the clutch inspected by a friend's garage this morning for any signs of contamination and he reports none.... Read more
I have a friend with a diesel Avensis, he had three clutches in 100k miles, the first one lasted 70k which is reasonable, the second 20k which isn't and the third 5k. He took the garage to court and eventually got his money back, apparantly there was something with the flywheel which I presume is a DMF.
I have a peugeot 406 which has done 234k and a C5 with 200k, they both have their original clutches and DMFs.
Just bought a used Chrysler Grand Voyager (2006 model) - the Auxiliary Cabin Heater seems to be on all the time even when the engine heats up (apparently between 1/4 and 1/2 on the gauge is ok?). This is with the AC setting on Hi or set to 25-30 (70+). Even when the engine gets to 1/2 the 'blower' remains cold or fairly cold. Is this right? If not what should I suggest to the garage? I had a new set of front tyres fitted a while back after which I noticed the steering was a bit heavier and at full lock the steering wheel did not return to straight without a bit of effort. ... Read more
My first thought was also the top shock mounts but garage assured me that had all been checked and there was no excessive movement. To be fair I could not see any play but as you say it's not a quick job to check properly.
Hi, wonder if anybody can help please. In oct last year I started to have a few intermittent problems with my car. Driving one morning engine stalled and I could not restart car. RAC called who said problem was fuel related, they towed me to local garage. About a week later garage took a look at it and it started first time for them. They said they thought I may have flooded vehicle!! I had car back and it worked fine for another four weeks then I felt like the car was losing power, accelerator was right down to floor with very little revs. Revs would then suddenly short up to usual levels. One day lost power about three times in the day and then at night car wouldn't start, called RAC out again who said they thought there was an air lock in fuel system, they managed to get me started and I drove home approx 20 miles, but had to keep revs high. Next morning car would not start at all. Towed to local garage who spent three weeks looking at it, they thought it was an ecu issue. Car towed to main dealer who after one week also said it was likely to be ecu issue but they couldn't be certain as may need new throttle. Cost for new ecu extortionate and as delayer could not be certain I was not prepared to write an open cheque. After much persuasion garage agreed for me to send my ecu off for testing. First company could not find any problem so I sent it away to second company to satisfy main dee alter. They said they had found fault and have repaired it (lifetime guarantee). Car was returned to me yesterday from main dealer. I drove it for approx 70 miles absolutely fine and then last night problem occurred again!!! Do I need to but new ecu or could it be something else? Cambelt was replaced at beginning of October and I also misfuelled in September. Any thoughts would be most appreciated
Many thanks

Hello one of previous questioners ask why there are not many private sellers and you said because the government have made it harder for the private individual to purchase a car now off another private individual.
Please correct me if this is wrong, but there are 2 ways for private people to buy within the law.... Read more
There is some misunderstanding here. The VED does not get cancelled from the date the DVLA receive the V5 - it gets cancelled from the date of transfer.
So, if the seller puts 20/3/15 as the date in the V5 and posts it off on the 24th, the DVLA processes it on the 28th it will get cancelled back to the 20th....

After searching for some new front tyres (Pierlli P7 Blues- awesome BTW) I've noticed that the back tyres are different speed and weight ratings.

Inside the drivers door it states 'V <160 km/h. But all tyre websites only give the option of W.
"V" rated is good for 240 km/h or 149 mph. No idea where you have got 160 km/h from, that would be a "Q" rated tyre which I have honestly never seen....
