I have a problem with my 2.5CRD smoking thick black smoke under hard acceleration. When I rev the engine while idling the smoke appears at around 2000rpm. When I start it first thing regardless of how warm or cold, there is a plume of white smoke that disappears after 10 seconds.
I changed the air filter it made no difference. I called AA technical assistance and the guy said it might be stem valve seals and it was a big job. Also said it could be a faulty injector... Read more

So a diagnostic scan would pick up things like faulty egr, sensor issues etc?
Hi,
For years I have driven down to Devon in a 2004 Ford Fiesta along the A303 and found that after a while reception of BBC Radio 2 cuts out. I'm not sure exactly where this happens, I think it's somewhere between Stone Henge and Wincanton.... Read more

Serial numbers usually begin with a "V" or an "M"
If it's an "M" code you can use the following link to work out your code:...
Knowing the wide range of knowledge and experience on the forum I wondered if anyone could give any pointers.
I have a small outdoor storage area, about 4mx2m, with a felt flat roof. This now needs replacing and I am considering having glass fibre instead of felt. I have been told glass fibre will have a life expectancy of 20 years so could prove more cost effective.... Read more
Hello scot, Is it vital that your shed roof is installed to a habitable standard? If not, then there are several cost effective options you can consider. To have it felted with hot bitumen or heat applied felt is one option. This means removing the existing felt. Both types of heat applied felts go straight down onto the roof boards, which need to be in good condition. If the boards have suffered from water ingress then they need replacing. All this is a cost for only a 'shed'.
Alternatively you can cover the existing roof material. I put steel profiled sheets over mine, with an edge trim. They screw down into the roof boards or joists with self sealing screw heads. This cost me about £180 for a 3M x 2.5M shed. I had considered laying new felt onto the existing using cold bitumen but the cost was marginally more and the job would have taken longer and would have been very messy. Been on since last July and no problems at all and not expecting any. It is my workshop and tool store so I like it dry. Consider this option....
My teenage son is soon to take his driving test, and will be buying his first car (something like a 10-year-old Fiesta / Clio / Corsa etc).
Anyone got any recommendations for which insurance firm to approach? My wife and I are both on Direct Line, but I can't imagine them offering a particularly good deal for a first-time driver ...... Read more
Good point, drd63: I used to use a broker who was very good and far from clueless - but they just didn't have enough insurers that they dealt with, and it was easy to go online and do a better deal directly.
And so it came to pass in the land of screetching tyres and roaring engines the High Priest Bernie stepped onto the steps of the F1 tabernacle and to the adoring crown decreed thus:

Hi, I have problem with my car witch i bought a few days ago so im still waiting for v5. but the car has been impounded for no tax and it also have no mot. have I got any chance to get it back and claim it. because i didnt even drive it and i couldn't tax it or make it SORN. thank you Read more
The seller should have given you the new keeper supplement which has all the info to enable you to tax the vehicle. As far as I am aware you cannot tax a vehicle without the info on the V5C, if I am worng on that someone please correct me. But you can declare SORN by submitting form V890 and include form V62 to register the vehicle in your name.
The law is quite clear, a car must be either taxed or on a SORN and to be used on the road must be taxed, MOT'd and insurred. The only exception is you can drive a car to a pre booked MOT with no tax but the car must still be insurred....

My previous car was a Corsa auto 1.4 which gave 22 mpg. The engine was checked twice and found to be okay. After a year I sold it and bought the Yaris 1.4 auto. Both cars were used for the same journeys which are between 3 to 7 miles daily on rural roads. The Yaris (on the 100 mile test) shows the consumption as 52 mpg. It would appear that if I used it on longer runs or particularly in town that the consumption would be much lower. The site HonestJohn provides some interesting comment on user's consumption.
