The glow plug indicator is the engine malfunction light.Next stop is somewhere that can plug in some diagnostic equipt to find out what is going on.it may be a good idea to get the fuel filter replaced first before going down the expensive route.hth

Hi,

I have a 2006 Astra 1.6 petrol. I was driving it for a couple months with the engine electronics light (car with spanner) illuminated on the dashboard. I got the fault codes cleared but the light came back. Because it didn't affect performance I continued to drive and intended to get it looked at in next service.... Read more

I the first paragraph of your original post sums it up.The light was on ,due to a defect manifold flap, but it drove ok.The non start is a different problem .The fact it drove ok for a couple of days is coincidental.hth

Finally decided to go for a new iX35 and would appreciate any advice on whether to go for the 1.7 or the 2.0 Diesel. I have driven both and found the 2.0 a bit quieter and a bit more gutsy but am concerned about the fuel economy; I've looked at Real MPG and just wanted to check whether anyone has experience of the post-facelift 2.0 CRDi - is it any better or just the same as the old one?

Thanks... Read more

I haven't driven this model but in general with this sort of issue, if you only drive gently, the smaller engine wil do fine, but if you like to get a move on, go for the bigger engine. To make brisk progress you'd have to work the smaller engine harder, thus reducing or negating the economy advantage.

In one of my my business incarnations I run a lettings agency.

The manager drives a Mini, but that will soon depart and we need to source a less expensive pool car which will be used not only for her but other staff to go out to doing inspections etc. I reckon that the car will do no more than 6,000 miles pa and there will be lot of stop start trips.... Agreed a leasing deal of £465 down and 35 payments of £155 (all plus VAT) for 8,000 miles pa.

Everyone happy including the staf member who will be driving it mainly and the FD.

It's funny how small things like the feel / feedback from controls can really affect the enjoyment of a car.

I've just had a Volvo V40 D4 (the 177bhp diesel) for a day. A nice premium hatch, tidy handling, fairly smooth ride etc.... Read more

It could be that what your are feeling is the turbo cutting in. This can give an "all or nothing" effect at various throttle openings. Not so obvious at higher speeds.

www.mattbarney.co.uk/fiestastartupgraph.jpg shows a graph of a cold startup taken the other day. Note that it only took 6 seconds to go down to a normal idle speed. Blue is RPM, red is STFT (multiplied by 10, for the sake of readability). Notice how at point 16 the revs are pretty normal but STFT is 41%!
