I bought a 1999 golf last week from a dealer with a months warranty and found out later that the dealer is dodgy. After 4 days the car broke down and I don't know whether it is a big problem that will remain with the car even after they take it in and fix it because I don't trust the dealer. The ABS light came on and the car started to chuck and then it just cut out altogether. It started with a jump start but it stays chucking for a few minutes and cuts out again with the ABS light coming on. I reckon its a problem with the electronics in the car. The battery is perfect. Also the revs are totally off and the clocks stopped working. Anyone able to tell me exactly what the problem is and what would be the best thing to do? Read more

Tried to open the rear door on my Audi this morning. It eventually opened but refused to latch when closed.
The door lock lever dosn't seem to offer any resistance like the opposite side. The lever mechanism inside the lock does not click in the locked position so there is no grab on male peg on the door frame. ... Read more
Spray the lock with W40 or anything similair it might release the lever mechanism.

On the 1.1 petrol the oil filter insert (it's not a metal cartridge type) can break causing the low oil pressure light to activate at tick over.
Activating the washers with the bottle frozen will blow the fuse. I've not experienced this on german cars.
The tick over can get a bit lumpy. Large range of potential causes. Cleaning the idle valve improved but didn't completely cure ours.
Steering is a bit wooly, not exactly a drivers car.
We sold ours in the summer. Pretty good car overall.
Most of the time it'll start fine. Sometimes you turn the ignition and the warning lights come on but when you turn the key further to engage the starter all the electics go off completely ie clock, warning lights, the lot. So, open the bonnet, disconnect the quick release positive battery lead, then reattach it and everything back to normal. Except yesterday this quick fix didn't work and I had to jump start it from another car. Could this be a battery fault, a dodgy lead (which looks fine) or some strange Peugeot electrical gremlin? The most likely problem is poor battery connections, take off both terminals and scrape the posts until you can see clean metal, do the same with the connectors then apply some grease before reconnection. The battery could be faulty or it could be a poor connection on the other end of the battery leads but try cleaning them first.
Does anyone have any advice about loud crack type noises that seem to come from the dashboard or windscreen struts of the convertible we have just bought? It is a BMW series 1 car and the noises are quite disconcerting when driving over a bump or going round doundabouts? It is mainly in the first 10 miles of driving a journey and the car is only about 10 months old. Any advice would be appreciated. Read more
Took my car to the local main dealer. The fault was diagnosed as a problem with the fitting of the passenger side A pillar trim, which was removed and refitted. The problem has now disappeared.
The engine management light has just come on today, and last week the ESP and ABS warning lights came on, and im about to take my car into the garage.
Can any one tell me what are the garage likely to say it is, is it a common vw problem.... Read more
Thank you for your reply i will book a diagnostic, and go now and check my lights, as i didnt realize it could be something as simple as lights its well worth a check it would be nice if it turns out to be something simple, when i saw the words Engine Management contact vw immediately... i thought the engine was about to die! many thanks
My son has an VGC MG ZR that has a blown head gasket. That's the easy part.
He can't afford to repair it as he's emigrating soon so wants to sell it for spares to get as much for it as he can. The car is in his car park but now has a flat battery and the only key is either under the bonnet or in the boot.... Read more
hi if you have the correct tools you should be able to pick the lock if not either the AA or a locksmith would be your best bet.
