Hi. Just bought this car but the previous keeper hasn't signed section 8 of the V5C. Need to tax it at the post office tomorrow so is this a problem? How about I just scrawl something myself... lol Thanks for any help, Rob. Read more
Genuinely puzzled, I understand from what i have been told that some automatics "lock out" 1st and start in second when the snow/slippery button pressed, and have also been told it is better to do so with a manual as well.
This I cannot understand.... Read more
It depends on the gearing of the vehicle. Modern manual cars and light vans are designed for starting in first gear. There might be circumstances where starting in second on a very slippery surface allows a gentler feed-in of torque, but if you then get wheelspin, it will be that much faster.
On medium and heavy commercial vehicles, first gear is often a low gear for starting on hills when laden, so starting in second or an even higher gear is often perfectly acceptable on them.

I have got a ford focus 1.8L petrol manual (mk2). My wife has got a 1L nissan micra (bubble shape). Surprisingly enough, the micra outperforms the focus by far on ice. both have standard tyres as everything else.
Why is that? Why is the micra better on icy road as compared to the focus? Read more
I am getting older and softer :)
I have an anoying whistle in the engine bay. I took it to my local french car specialist who located it near the egr valve at the drivers side bulkhead but cant pinpoint it.
Ive been told it could possibly be to do with the fuel rail and that some people think changing the fuel filter housing (bad one way valve) would help.... Read more
Thanks for the reply but the exhaust hasnt been touched. I thought about that though.
Ive recently had a fuel pressure regulator fitted and an air flow meter because of some fault codes that came up on the diagnostic....
I want to buy a fiesta ( 03-04 Reg) but I need to know real fuel consumption figures and not the ones given on web sites. What, if any, are the returns of 1.2, 1.25 , 1.3 etc?
Any advice would be appreciated. Any thing to look for or avoid? will be bought from a dealer.... Read more
The real fuel consumption figures relate to driving style. If you get a 1388 zetec then if you pootle around you could see around 50mpg but if you need to get a wriggle on then it`s got the umph but mpg will drop to around 30.Will depend on mileage, servicing also.Front suspension lower arm bushes wear but the wishbone is cheap to replace as a whole.Heater control valves pack up eventually but cheap&easy to replace.Front discs can wear if used hard and front brakes can bind if neglected or used lightly, that`ll bring your mpg down, but that`s the same on most vehicles.Very reliable cars, use motor factors rather than Ford to save yourself a fortune on spares.Choose a low mileage example with full service history for peace of mind.
Should you put winter tyres on all round, or just on the driving wheels?
Thanks,... Read more

Received a letter this morning from fiscals office asking me to attend thier office. Went this afternoon expecting the worst, but after a stern lecture from the fiscal he told me that after due consideration .....and given my reasons for driving at the time and received confirmation from my insurance that I had been told it would be ok to drive,,,that they would not be pursueing the case.
of course very relieved ,,but have noted Lucy BC comments and am sure I got off very lightly.
