As I regularly commute along the A14 at this time of year each evening 4 out of 5 lorries are travelling covered in lights. Is it allowed for lorries to be feestooned with lights looking like a prop out of Las Vegas or a gaudy Christmas tree?

Surely this dangerous? illegal? Read more

Maybe 'Christmas tree' trucks aren't a problem to M-way drivers with lots of other ambient

light to soften the contrast, but I can say that on the country roads (A/B & unclassified) that I do alot of driving on, they're a blinding menace. Quite often you're faced with ~500-watts of headlight & assorted 'extra' lights coming at you on a 50mph/NSL road - for a few seconds before eye adaption kicks in you can be blinded & not be able to see the verge or position in road of the truck....

Hi To All
Changed the oil twice before in my 06 / 1.3 diesel Combo Van and all went well.
This time I started it up and the 2.5 liters gushed out in like 5 sec. I immediately shut

down and thought I had not tighten the plastic oil filter cover, I kicked myself. :eh

So bought some more oil and I just started the van for 1 sec. and about a liter came out.

Right where the plastic cap meets the metal oil filter housing.

So far I think ...
1.) "O" ring in wrong notch
2.) Plastic Cap needs some mysterious positioning alignment
3.) The plastic guard rail that the top spring sets into needs replacing, even though Im

sure I seated the top spring to the guard rail flush.

I did go today and get a new filter which was the only way to get the O ring. And bought a 32mm socket for the plastic bolt on top of the housing. I asked the service manager at Opel what notch the O ring belonged in and to my amazement he knew and told me. I feel 100% confident that I will have the van running Sun.
Thanks again ...jack

The air distribution system on these old mondeos is vacuum controlled. If there is only air to the windscreen, then this would indicate a loss of vacuum to the system. This could be a simple fault of a split /broken pipe in the engine bay from the vacuum take off point on the engine.hth

Shame I missed the last thread about forum going downhill, as I wanted to make a few general comments on this theme.

I prefer HJ because I think it's moderated in a way that more suits what I look for in a forum - it's polite, not cliquey & not too disparaging of 'newbie bloopers' or patronising. I make no comparisons with any other motoring website/forum in saying this - just a statement of what pleases me & encourages my return.... Read more

Might want to ask HJ et al if this thread should be in the archive too:

Having limited knowledge of engines, I was wondering for any views on the following point. As we are now seeing the colder weather and shorter days, batteries are taking the hammer with, heated screens, mirrors, seats, lights being used more etc. My commute is relatively short at 3miles each way and I am usually doing 30ish mph. I always try to give the car a decent run once a month at this time of year to help the battery have a good charge but I was wondering if I travelled in 4th gear rather than 6th this would assist the alternator to keep the battery charged (Greater engine speed). Yes there will be a slight increase in fuel usage but removing the risk of having a weak battery seems worth it. Any thoughts on whether any difference would be seen with such relatively short trips or am I completely wrong with the theory? Read more
