Evening all,

I have just had the Auxilary belt replaced on my car but it is really noisey and squeeking.
I have been spraying a lot of WD40 on the top cog (sorry not sure of its name) and the noise has been going away but as soon as I leave the car and restart it up again a little while later the noise is back.
Is there a way of me fixing this myself?
I can take the car back to the mechanic but it will mean me not having the car for a day.... Read more

Hi, I'm doing the head gasket at the moment, [ corsa b 1.2, 8 valve]. question is can the cam belt be put back as was, ie not moving the water pump. The idler guide with the pointers on can be moved against its spring in order to remove and replace belt, so providing pointer lines up, theres no need to move pump in theory. is this common practice. the belt was new last year so is not being replaced. thanks for any replies. My Cavalier had about 3 cambelts replaced where they didn't (couldn't) move waterpump. Belts just whined a bit for first 1,000 miles but I had no problems. In fact the only time garage moved pump they ruined it and it started leaking!

I want to get some Xenon lights on my next car. I hate driving in the dark on unlit roads. With dipped lights it can be very hard to see and I often need to slow down.

Some people seem to moan about being blinded by them. What do people think, are they really that bad or are they really useful? Read more

As an E280 chassis wdb 210 model, this fault is usually a problem with the gear selector module. This is the complete shift lever and the electronics that are housed below it.Not a cheap job I'm afraid.hth

I am trading in my black ford focus zetec 1.6 petrol with 62500 on the clock against an 09 silver ford focus 1.6 petrol zetec 1.6 petrol with 15500 on the clock.

Dealer has offered me £3500 trade in on mine which matches the glass's valuation.

His car has a screen price of £8999.

How much do you think I would get away with asking for as a reduction?
I always assume there is room for a bit of negotiation when it comes to buying cars second hand but obviously if I ask for something ridiculous off it is just going to make me look stupid.

Thanks

I just bought a 1.6 Zetec on 09 plate 6 months ago for £8995 so this price is a little high now.

I would say try for £1000 of the price if you can and negotiate from there. You didnt say how old your old car is though so its not possible to get a view on wheteher the £3500 is good.

I am thinking of getting a Passat 2.0 140PD on an 05 plate at a good price wtih full VWSH and about 90K miles, but am concerned that the oli pump is a know failure point on these. Can anyone tell me whcih years were affected and when VW changed the design of the pump drive? Which engine codes, or any other info that might stop me wasting £1000's Read more

All I can offer is it is that if it is BRE engine code it will be okay but I dont know what other codes are also ok..

Car went for annual service at the independent garage that we've used for many years. It needed a new n/s/r tyre and they could not source a matching Conti one, so fitted a Firestone instead. Straight away it was making a 'drumming noise' mainly in the 30 - 55 mph range. We assumed it was a problem with the tyre and it has now been swapped for a matching Conti tyre, but we still have the noise.

Suggestions please!

I'm think about wheel bearing - could running a new tyre suddenly start it to get noisy? Read more

It sounds to me that you need the car tracked up.

I'm shocked to find that the rear tyres on my 2008 Mondeo Titanium X Saloon hve worn unevenly. I had to replace tham after 30,000 miles. The outside of the tyres were bald and the inside has still 4mm or so of tread - any known solutions? Read more

Had a quick google around and the rear tracking is adjustable on the Mondeo. As the outer edges are going, you have too much toe in. This is adjusted by cam bolts on the outer end of the rear wishbones. It seems to be a common problem, and some cars have been done a couple of times before getting it right.

Having looked on these forums the control valve seems to be the most common problem. Just before I go out and buy a new one... I checked all the pipes going through the valve and they are all hot, which I thought should mean there will be heat going inside the car. Does this mean its not the valve thats at fault? Read more

The 'heater control valve' is the 'weakest link!' in both the 'Mk4 and Mk5 Fiesta' and the 'Ka' from the same time period.

It might be worth your while, whilst you are replacing the 'HCV valve' and the coolant is drained to renew the 'thermostat at the same time....
