Why is it that whenever a car is needed to promote a product (other than the car) in an TV/internet/newspaper advert the advertisers feel obliged to make one up, but when a van is needed they're quite happy to use a real vehicle?

Now I appreciate that there will be exceptions, but as a general rule cars are often made-up.... Read more

Actually it's not always true that they "make up" cars for breakdown ads -- I have recognised a few obscure Mitsubishis and Korean cars that have been lightly modified for use on these ads.

A motor oil company (forget which one) did this with a pair of '04 Hyundai Sonatas as well (which is the only example that I can remember the details of).

I have a Mondeo 2010 turbo diesel. It has an intermittent problem where if you stop at the lights and accelerate, it may take a second before it accelerates. This is not turbo lag. It happens more at heavy throttle than light.

It has also happened at cruise speed and attempting to accelerate results in no change to the tacho and no increase in speed.... Read more

Thanks jc2,

It looks like I have two separate faults. The brake and the throttle.

I have been looking around for a good used 95 estate and was hoping to see a number on the market by now as P/Xs with the new car being released in September. This does not seem to be the case however, with few cars showing up on searches, and those that do come up being way over the Parkers Guide prices. What is happening with this model at present? Is there a lack of cars on the market due to poor sales of the new car, or did they sell so few in 2008/9 that they are rare on the current market? What is a realistic price for the model quoted above with average mileage? What is likely to happen to prices when the new 95 estate eventually arrives?

thanks... Read more

thanks for the reply, I have had a look at the Mark Arnold site and the prices there are certainly more in line with what I was expecting having looked a Parkers guide prices. I also like the ethos he is portraying on his site, so will certainly keep an eye on his stocklist. The savings on his prices should more than offset the lack of the SAAB direct warranty, which I have found to be very comprehensive in the past., having had a clutch and other bits and pieces replaced without quibble. That was the main reason for looking at main dealers, but perhaps I have been barking up the wrong tree!

there is a black plastic pipe that runs across the front of the engine with a valve in it & these often cause problems, about £18.00 from ford.

Worth checking the valve clearances as these get overlooked and cause lumpy idle as well. Belt timing needs to be spot on to make them run smoothly

In late September 2006 my elderly dad paid a Skoda main dealer £10300 for a brand new Skoda Fabia 5dr hatchback 1.4 16v elegance ac. petrol, manual, metallic stone grey with alloy wheels. Exactly three years later in September 2009 with only 12000 miles on the clock and a few odd scratches the dealership purchased the car back from him for £4000 in part exchange for a brand new Skoda Fabia 1.4TDI diesel manual black. The on the road price was £11600 less the £4000. I feel that he was probably ripped off. Can anyone give me a steer on the part exchange price he probably should have received.

hi,

Today i was driving my nissan almera (03 reg, with 69000 on clock) for 2 hrs on motorway and when i left the motor way and came to traffic lights to stop i found car revs going very down nearly at zero but then it goes up to its origional pt (pt where they r used to b starting the car). It did that at 3 or 4 times whenever it comes to stop...but after that it started driving fine only for couple of miles and then suddenly engine management came on...... Car is still driving fine with no revs going up and down.....and no loss of power...... Read more
