Ford Escort van T reg 99 55 1.8D - Lumpy cold start idle, stalling and hesitation!! - thunderfromdownunder

hi guys,

Im hoping you lot can help. I recently bought a escort van 1.8D on a t reg. Its pretty clean, and ive done 2k in just over 2months and she hasn't failed me yet (touchwood).

Ok first thing is i recently had it serviced (last staurday) and replaced oil and filters, air filter and fuel filter.

Ok from cold start it will fire after about 10 secs which i can live with, however once it starts it sound like a rotary engine and what i can only describe as lumpy!! if you dont give it some herbs it would simply just cut out, but i just rev (2-3k max) it for 20 secs and it seems fine.

Shes always a bit jerky while warming up (again i dont mind) however then i encounter my next problem, random stalling, only seems to happen after i have stopped and then try to start again (hate driving in builtup areas, using clutch all the time). Its also worth noting it only really happens in 1st and 2nd (ocassionaly 3rd).Never stalls when im crusing at 50-60 mph! When its about to stall, if i push the clutch in and try and rev it but does nothing, almost like its starving the engine of fuel, then all of a sudden it comes back to life.

Same thing when it hesitates....ive had to adapt my driving style becuase when i let the clutch out sometimes it like no power, so i ride clutch for a bit, then the revs pick up and then i can release the clutch fully and take off.

just a couple of other things to take into account..no signs of power loss, pulls well for a straight one eight d. It has brand new lifter pump, so would be suprised if it was leaking air (zip tied rubber glove over it, no difference) primer pump alway solid after 2 or 3 pumps. Have noticed diesel leak on fuel tank or lines not sure which havent had time to investigate.

mmm thats all i can think of atm, but hopefully somebody out there can help me :-)))

Thinking it might be a fuel starving problem but not sure where or how or what to test etc, not sure if fuel pump is dodgy or soemthing??

Thanks in advance

Joff

there is a black plastic pipe that runs across the front of the engine with a valve in it & these often cause problems, about £18.00 from ford.

Worth checking the valve clearances as these get overlooked and cause lumpy idle as well. Belt timing needs to be spot on to make them run smoothly
