rover - rover 414 8v died - gasspringmaker

My father was driving his 414 this morning and it just died on him

His fan belt came off, and car turns over but no compression!!

can anybody shed any light on this problem?

Have told him could be cambelt but that seems to be in one piece??

Head gasket gone?

Has it overheated recently?

Have you got any more info?

Where there any symptoms prior to this happening?

Has the cambelt been changed in the time your father has owned the car?

Not sure when cambelt was last done.

No prior symptoms, just stopped on way to work this morning.

Engine turns over , but sounds like belt has gone.

He has had a look and says belt is still on, but no comprssion!!

Cannot be sure, but it sounds like the 'Cylinder Head Gasket' could have blown.

although cambelt is more likely.

If I remember correctly the Rover 200 has a habit of blowing the Head Gasket, to hazard a guess, this is probably the same engine that they use in the 200 series, although I am probably wrong, being more of an expert on Ford engines.

Is their a mayonaise type residue inside the oil filler cap?

The cambelt may still be on but may have lost its teeth, thus no drive to camshaft.hth

normally when the polly belt ( fan belt) shreds bits go in the cam cover and cause the timing belt to fail.

I would check the cam belt timimg first.

As to the above posts, no milkyness under the oil filler cap, oil looks fine in sump aswell.

By what father in law said he heard noise and car died, so he stopped, think fan belt was lying on road.

He seems to have looked at the timing and can get the cam to lock up( wich seems to me that somethings bent , or hitting something)?

If he cambelt jumped a couple of teeth would that cause the engine to lock up and throw off the fan belt?

"If he cambelt jumped a couple of teeth would that cause the engine to lock up and throw off the fan belt?"

Absolutely,it`s an inertia reaction....for every action etc....

Crank stops suddenly, alternator spinning with no restriction, one side of belt loads up and boing it goes off the pulley!
