And you can get a really good feel for how good they are from the fact that they've resorted to spamming internet forums for trade.

The poster who's spamming had a different user name last night, 'ecu-repairs' which just happens to be a sister site to the one he's promoting, i've made a note to avoid those companies in the future....

Hi, i had an issue with my fiesta recently, it was randomly over heating, and the temperature of the heater inside the car was also whatever it decided to be at the time, i wasn't losing coolant or oil, and both were clean from one another. Some times i could do 100 miles trouble free and another i'd do 5 miles and the temp gauge would hit red and coolant would be bubbling away.

I changed the thermostat £9, flushed the system, and re-filled the coolant £10 and that never fixed the problem.... Read more

Mine`s been doing the same.Previous owner replaced the plastic-degraded heater control unit in the bulkhead recess and didn`t purge the system of air .They released the expansion tank cap when hot several times to get the temp gauge reading normal(not recommended unless you really know what you`re doing!)

I take possession of said vehicle and all is well for a couple of thousand miles until one day tootling along at sixty on a B-road half-way into my 30-mile journey home there was a horrible burnt plastic smell.I half expected to see flames come out of the dash and suspected an electrical fire. Then 3mins later I was hit with a wave of intense heat from the vents....

I am regularly passed, as I drive home from work along the A14 towards Suffolk, by a motorcyclist who peels off onto the A14 heading towards Norfolk. Riding a big silver fully fared tourer with matching panniers, he travels serenely along at the legal limit wearing a white full face helmet with a blue and white chequered band around its base, reflective over jacket with blue and white chequered band around the waistline and dark leather trousers and boots. As he approaches he looks like a police motorcyclist. I am convinced he is just a commuter as there is no other sign such as aerial, siren, radio etc; fitted . Has anyone else seen him? Is it legal to 'pose' as a policeman? Any comments? Read more

I haven't commuted along the A14 for over 4 years since I reitred so I wonder whether the 'policeman' is still plodding along on his Deauville.

"the alarm dosen't seem to working. The lights flash as if the car alarm has set, but even rocking the car isn't setting it off. Can this problem be sorted out?"

It will be an aftermarket alarm. Standard alarms didn't come in until the Mk2.5 I think....

She is under a duty to "mitigate" her losses which means she must be put back to where she was with an "acceptable standard" repair as cheaply as possible. Otherwise she is liable for the additional costs. So if you can find a garage that will do the repair for £280 and she puts in a bill for £600 then she would need to stand the £320 herself. Furthermore insurance companies are notoriously careful when they see particularly high bills from garages owned by the claimant's relatives.

This is probably one of the few cases when you want your insurer to "manage" your accident but you need to make it clear from the outset that you want to "self insure" - ie pay for the repairs yourself and not claim on the policy.

The chances are they will put her into one of their authorised repairers - or at least get them to quote. If the bill is lower then you can pay it and she has no argument.

Dealing with it in this way should not affect your no claims discount but you may be quoted a slightly higher premium at renewal because you have had an accident.

That’s going to make life difficult as I don’t live near any turbo specialists!

I took it to Citroen and they basically wanted me to write them a blank check before they would even investigate!...

I have owned one of these soon to be classics for 18 years. It is a C-reg, 120K, in generally good shape. The problem is pinking and misfiring. The engine starts fine and runs well cold. The trouble starts when warm, and under load. Sometimes accelerating off a roundabout has it stuttering so much it seems in danger of stalling. Then, usually, flooring it cures the problem, but lifting off and reapplying the gas again can cause a backfire.

Spark plugs look OK, fuel filter recently changed, fuel pump is a bit noisy but seems fine. A light spray of WD40 over the electrics sometimes improves things. Could it just be needing a new distributor cap, or something more serious?... Read more

Sounds familiar. I would get the engine management system checked out but if this is OK it might be the injectors.

I have a 1988 1.9 [not a 1.6] and it has suffered from uneven running over the years. I eventually took the injectors to a specialist cleaning firm [don't bother with your average garage Peugeot or otherwise] and they discovered one blocked, one dirty, and 2 clean. They cleaned them up [not cheap] and all seems well at present....

My first Merc is a 2003 C270 and I love it to bits apart from one thing. The A10 radio/casette has the worst radio reception of any car I have owned. It's fine where the signal is strong but fades quickly at the bottom of hills and even disappears completely in some areas where reception is possible in all other vehicles. I've read that the amplifier fuse connected with this radio is in the habit of blowing or even the amplifier itself fails. I can't check the fuse or the amplifier because I just don't know where to look for either (the handbook is not helpful). Grateful for any help anyone can give me. Dandan the Merc Man.

Engine management light has come on. Its a white engine icon.
Oil, water and engine temp are OK.
Car starts and drives OK.
Is this potentially serious?

I suppose I will need to read the ECU code somehow. Is this a main dealer only job, or will a backstreet garage be able to do this?
Given the age, mileage and bodywork of the car, I'm not keen on paying main dealer prices.... Read more
