That’s going to make life difficult as I don’t live near any turbo specialists!

I took it to Citroen and they basically wanted me to write them a blank check before they would even investigate!...

I have owned one of these soon to be classics for 18 years. It is a C-reg, 120K, in generally good shape. The problem is pinking and misfiring. The engine starts fine and runs well cold. The trouble starts when warm, and under load. Sometimes accelerating off a roundabout has it stuttering so much it seems in danger of stalling. Then, usually, flooring it cures the problem, but lifting off and reapplying the gas again can cause a backfire.

Spark plugs look OK, fuel filter recently changed, fuel pump is a bit noisy but seems fine. A light spray of WD40 over the electrics sometimes improves things. Could it just be needing a new distributor cap, or something more serious?... Read more

Sounds familiar. I would get the engine management system checked out but if this is OK it might be the injectors.

I have a 1988 1.9 [not a 1.6] and it has suffered from uneven running over the years. I eventually took the injectors to a specialist cleaning firm [don't bother with your average garage Peugeot or otherwise] and they discovered one blocked, one dirty, and 2 clean. They cleaned them up [not cheap] and all seems well at present....

My first Merc is a 2003 C270 and I love it to bits apart from one thing. The A10 radio/casette has the worst radio reception of any car I have owned. It's fine where the signal is strong but fades quickly at the bottom of hills and even disappears completely in some areas where reception is possible in all other vehicles. I've read that the amplifier fuse connected with this radio is in the habit of blowing or even the amplifier itself fails. I can't check the fuse or the amplifier because I just don't know where to look for either (the handbook is not helpful). Grateful for any help anyone can give me. Dandan the Merc Man.

Engine management light has come on. Its a white engine icon.
Oil, water and engine temp are OK.
Car starts and drives OK.
Is this potentially serious?

I suppose I will need to read the ECU code somehow. Is this a main dealer only job, or will a backstreet garage be able to do this?
Given the age, mileage and bodywork of the car, I'm not keen on paying main dealer prices.... Read more

Could be a lambda sensor or the cat failed.. Cheap aftermarket cats often fail - hence the question..

So long as the self adjusters are free they should adjust themselves up very quickly once shoes are bedded in.

It is easy though to forget to clip the retaining spring over the adjuster and getting the adjuster spring itself the right way round, if the adjuster isn't under tension then they will not work proper like....

Right...I have a Manual Peugeot 307 LX HDI (2003 Reg) 1398 Diesel, to be fair I haven't had loads of issues with it but one recurring problem seems to be a lack of wanting to start! I hear the solenoid click but the starter motor won't then turn over, it doesn't even try.

I originally thought it was the starter motor (as you would) and had this changed about 4 months ago...the issue seemed to be resolved up until about 2 weeks ago when it started to play up again! I do have the car booked into a garage to look at the starter motor again, but I get the feeling it's not the issue.... Read more

Just a quick one this -- I could do with a gallery of the pedal positions of various cars. Having been bitten by the Ford, and not wanting to go through that again but not wishing to traipse around looking at cars on the off-chance, I thought I could use such a set of pictures to rule out certain models.

For reference, the Focus's accelerator pedal is around 2" too far to the left for me, and the brake pedal more like 3-4"(at a minimum) as they have made no effort to group the two pedals together as the typical Japanese carmaker does. They're also set far too high which is going to be more tricky to filter without looking at vehicles but if I can get rid of a fair few it would help. Read more

Just google "focus master cylinder clutch".

The symptom on my car is that the pedal goes all the way to the floor and the bite point seems (relatively) too high as a result....

I am looking to buy a new motor from a online new car discount place. From what I can see, they just buy in bulk and supply with 1 owner on the docs which is like buying an ex-demo. So for me it works fine.

Problem is that I have looked at some of these dealers and their company history is sometimes a little suspect. Some have been going for a long time, others have clearly gone into liquidation and then started another company with a similar name. Others are sole traders so there's not much comeback.... I would only give you 3 points of advice that MUST be followed:

1. Only deal with a company that is actually a genuine business with infrastructure> their are many websites out there where they are just one man bands working from a spare room at home. They have no premises you can visit or genuine business infrastructure to deal with you proffesionally in the case of anything that goes wrong....

I'm a time served mechanic in the trade now 25years and just want to alert all mazda owners to the recurring problem I have seen on many mazda's of blocked oil pickup strainers. The first warning you as the driver will notice is the odd flicker of the oil light often only at higher revs.DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO PASS THIS SYMPTOM OFF AS A GLITCH.... IT IS SERIOUS. Have the sump removed and clean the strainer (after removing it from the oilpump) .If confirmation is required that this is a problem in your case then have the oil pressure tested. If the oil pressure remains low at 1500rpm and above (in some cases pressure has even been observed to drop as the engine rev's increase) then you have a "cloggage". These cars have smaller oil strainers than some of the other manufacturers and this makes them less tolerant of irregular servicing and the consequent carbon deposits that build up in all internal combustion engines

Failure to take action nearly always ends in disaster for the engine ie at best failure of crank bearings and in many cases total siezure Read more

Changing the oil frequencey wont have any effect (or little) as once the strainer is blocked its blocked.

To check the Torque settings on the injetor (no 1 in my and most cases) would solve also be of help Takes again minutes....

Yes I was going to say something similar! Change the oil and filter regularly and most Daihatsus will run on and on. They don't rust like they used to either which helps!
