dont know if this is of interest but vauxhall apparently has an issue with cdti coolant sensors and wiring... there is a mod kit which includes new gold plated contacts and a new sensor... this is giving a fault normally of poor starting when cold due to the ecu getting a false reading and shortening the lengh of time an injector is open and the length of time the g/plugs operate... but this could also cause the opposite fault where by if the ecu thinks the engine is cold then the injectors are open for longer pumping to much diesel into the cylinders and causing excess smoke, simular to the choke being stuck-on on a petrol engine... due to the wrong burn ration you would also experience a lack in power.

a simple check is to see if the coolant sensor plug has gold coloured contacts...

Hello all

I have noticed over the last few weeks that my X-Type has started to get a bit smokey it also feels what I would describe as a bit lumpy at the lower end of the rev range more noticeable in 2nd / 3rd gear, the motor is well looked after and is serviced every 12,000 miles have check the odvious air filter that was new 4,000 miles ago still nice and clean.... Hello all

The problem may now be sorted, what I thought was a non related noise coming from the aux belt area a kind of whoooishing sound, only heared under acceleration sounded more like the tension pulley was on it's way out (also a pretty common problem on these)...

I have a TUD5 motor that is in a Toro 3000D lawn mower. I had to rebuild it due to a rod going thru the side of the block. I have it rebuilt but when I go to start it, the engine just cranks until I spray a tiny amount of starting fluid in the air intake. It will then run but continues to blow white smoke (not from water). Once the engine is warm, I can shut it off, but it takes about 5-8 seconds of cranking to start without starting fluid. The engine has just under 2000 hours on it. I am wondering if it is a timing or injector/injector pump issue. I timed the engine with the three pins and made sure that they were in the middle of the hole on the pump and cam. Could the timing still be that far off and how much adjustment do I have before the valves hit the pistons?

Thanks,... Read more

I have the same engine which was missing the injector pump. I have acquired an automotive pump and fitted it but where the shut off solenoid is on the original pump (Lucas) this one (also Lucas) has a heavy steel plate cover. Does this pump use some other method for shut off? Thx,

Jim

Perhaps the new sensor is faulty or its wiring is causing the problem. I would check the resistance to ensure it is correct in this respect.

There's lots of stuff in the press lately about electric cars, some with fuel engines to charge them up or drive a generator, some without. I've never seen any mention of the heater, though - which for oldish thin me is the most important thing of all for most of the year.

A 1000 watt electric motor is quite powerful when it's actually using all thousand of the watts. However, in winter one really needs at least the equivalent of a 1000 watt blow heater for at least the first ten minutes of the journey. What's that going to do for the range? Or are they all going to be fitted with separate paraffin heaters? Read more

Some car heaters-not electric-have an output approaching four THOuSAND watts(4Kw.).

Hi, I hope someone can offer some advice with this intermittent problem with my Renault Megane. The car is the 05 1.6L 16V petrol which I've had for around 18 month (46K on the clock, and doing around 8K per year).

Every so often the car is very difficult to start. On pressing the 'start' button the engine turns over very roughly, sounding terrible (almost like a two stoke!) and dies again after a few seconds. To actually get the car going I need to start it several times, or gun the engine hard after which it idles and runs normally. The problem seems more prevalent during damp weather, but this occurred this morning (glorious day) and I suspect the problem is becoming more frequent/worse. Having said that the problem does not occur every day, or each time it it started.... Read more

It all depends how much damage it has done to the engine if you are handy with the tools its hardly a great problem to lift the head and have a look,if it only needs new valves then its quite a cheap repair if its totalled the engine you could still get a secondhand unit at a reasonable price. All depends on finances and how handy you are and if the rest of the car is in reasonable condition.
