Does cruise control use more fuel?

This applies to modern cars. This is my style of driving a car without cruise control. I accelerate gently, not sluggish or harshly. When i get to my desired speed i lift my foot slightly off the accelerator so that i am cruising at the desired speed using as less fuel as possible. When i go down a hill i lift my foot off the accelerator and let gravity do the work. Only apply accelerator when required. (No i am not the type who does 56.00 mph on the motorway, i do like to drive my car to the full within legal speeds of course ;-) ) Imagine you are on the motorway with the cruise control set at 70 mph. You have to apply brakes which automatically disengages the cruise control. When you press resume does the cruise control make the car accelerate harder than normal hence using more fuel? On a long journey is it economical to use cruise control compared to manual input (your right foot)? Read more

Think cruise is a God send on long journeys

Unless you know a road really well I wonder how you can atticipate every incline or decline precisly. Cruise will keep the cars I have driven at a constant speed....

Hi, hoping someone can help,, after a bit of advise. A friend has a Seat Altea which is due a service. The model is a 2.0 FSi on a 06 plate which has done 20k. The service suggests he also has a cambelt change.

Now question is, can he put the cambelt change (do a normal service) off for a year as he needs to get other things done, which are more important (brakes, mortgage)... Read more

HJ is absolutely right - a decent belt should last the life of the engine. Some years ago I changed a whining tension pulley on our 2.0GL Passat, and left the belt alone for 2 reasons. Firstly, it looked in perfect condition, and secondly it was too difficult for me to change. [ the pulley was easily accessible at the top of the engine]. When I eventually sold it at over 240,000m it was still going strong.....with the original belt.

This cambelt malarkey is a great wheeze to empty the punters' wallets twice. Firstly for an unnecessary belt change...and secondly about 20 or 30,000 miles later when a pulley or other driven appliance seizes and fries or breaks the belt. Or when the replacement inferior belt made of black raffia tears....

I have a focus zetec 1.6 52plate. Started it up on thursday, makin a very strange whirring noise, thought it was the fanbelt at first, noticed a leak under my car. then took it for a drive and the steering was extremly stiff, so i figured it was the power steering. Dad checked over the car and has found its the "sender unit" in the power steering where the leak is, he thought he'd managed to fix it, topped up the fluid, took it for a quick test run, got home and all the fluids gone again! not fixed!! trying to call up sc***pers now to find the part.

Hi,

We have a 2005 1.3 CDTI estate which works very well, but regularly, normally in 4th gear but can happen in any gear, there is a strong shaking from the engine at 1750 / 1800 RPM.... Read more

Well I'm glad that Atomix has sorted it all out for us :) Brilliant! Yes by all means go out and get a new DMF fitted - make it a clutch while you're at it :).Of course the garage who changed the clutch fitted a new DMF, and as it happens I had another one fitted when the 6 speed gearbox failed (as they do). So thats 2 new DMF's and the problem remained. Must be my odd car I guess ;). Still never mind, the egr blanking plate fixed it for me - All the best with it all :)

Switch on the ignition and fasten seatbelt; don't start the engine.

Press the trip reset and hold down for 2 secs, and you should see when the car thinks the next service is due....

Regarding 2) I had this happen after having one of the driveshaft gaiters renewed.

Considering purchasing a second hand (2 year old) Cee'd, with the 1.6 diesel 'high power' engine. I guess calling a 115hp diesel 'high power' is pushing things a bit, but having driven a pro-Cee'd with the same engine, it goes quite well.

The thought of having approximately five years of warranty remaining is quite appealing. Clearly it's not going to rival a Focus for handling and ride balance and if I'm expecting Golf style soft touch squashy plastics, I should look elsewhere. I'm trying to get accurate info on a few details. Have looked in various places on t'interweb and I think the following are all true and bode well for the longevity and reliability of the car. I tend to keep motors for a while, so assuming that it's going OK, I may well still have it after the 7 year warranty has expired and I'm left picking up the tab when things go wrong.

Anyway, if anybody can confirm (or deny!) the following, I'd be grateful:-

1) The car does not have a diesel particulate filter (DPF)
2) Strangely, the car does not have a dual mass flywheel (DMF)
3) The engine is chain cam, rather than cam belt.

Cheers

Yes, excellent chain cam, yes DPF, as others say only buy if you are going to do at least 1 regular trip where the engine will be able to get hot enought to regenerate the dpf, this involves very high exhaust temperatures. i would assume that it has a dual mass flywheel in common with other common rail diesel injections as this reduces vibration through the drivetrain, just be nice and smooth in your starts and gear changes and all will be well. for better fuel economy, learn to modify tour driving style and you will be happy, and your wallet too! I considered a ceed, but got an epica diesel because of the price, when chevrolet dealers were selling them off, and new/nearly new prices were silly. no regrets here!

happy motoring, let us know what you go for.

Hi there, i'm after views of fellow VW Polo 2005-2009 owners. I have recently bought this model and have been searching around for a service manual or a repair guide. I had this on my old Honda Civic and proved very useful to gain knowledge on the layout of the car aswell as when i needed to do little repairs here and there e.g. changinf the fuse for the back lights.

I have searched aroung for a Haynes guide for this model and could not find it.... Read more
