Renault scenic - Cam belt snapped - Iziwizz

Yesterday whilst driving my engine cut out completetely and the breakdown man did that tut and sigh routine where you know it will be expensive- my cam belt had snapped and shredded...

Any ideas as how much it would cost? He estimated £1000, its a Y reg and I'm thiking its not worth doing...

Is there any way of recovering any money from the car e.g. parts?

Apologies for the simple questions- I'm no car person (and the car was given to me- not my choice)

same thing happened to me on a clio, seems a big problem with renault regarding fitting cheap cam belts, the car is spares or repair.

It all depends how much damage it has done to the engine if you are handy with the tools its hardly a great problem to lift the head and have a look,if it only needs new valves then its quite a cheap repair if its totalled the engine you could still get a secondhand unit at a reasonable price. All depends on finances and how handy you are and if the rest of the car is in reasonable condition.
