Many thanks to all of you who sent E-mails about the boring man trying to flog computer games - too many of you to thank individually.

I've hidden the threads and disabled his account, Sorry for the delay in spotting this: we all work full-time, and can't always check the forum during the day. Read more

I tested a 2003 model today, it had a few things wrong with it, just wondered if they were easy to fix and if it was worth buying:

It's quite likely that the the aircon has a leak and usually needs a replacement condenser. Obviously, that will be more expensive than a recharge only.

I'm amazed that insurance companies allow no claims bonus to be swapped from one person to another. According to a friend it's easy for her to 'transfer' ncb from herself to her husband and vice-versa. By doing so it helps to build up extra bonus and can also be swapped to get a cheaper deal.

This all seems really wrong to me, as I think that no claims bonus should be earned 'fairly' by driving for 'x number of years' without a claim. I'm sure I'm subsidising this by paying a higher premium myself.... Read more

True the policy is low cost, but unlike some classic policies, it is a normal one with NCB. I could in theory use the NCB for a Superfast Thing of 2010.

What can you remember as `free` gifts, from petrol stations?

I can remember being in an Aunt`s car as a kid and the petrol attendant (remember them?) giving me free key rings at every fill up.... Read more

I remember Green Shield stamps.

My dad worked for a luxury car maker during that time and if and he was using one of the company's press demo cars, which drank a lot of petrol and had big petrol tanks, he used to look out for the garages giving triple, 5-fold or even 10-fold Green Shield stamps and fill up! The company paid for the petrol but they weren't interested in the stamps so he got to keep them. I can remember him cruising along with the low fuel light on in the hope that the next garage might do a good Green Shield offer. It kept us in ironing boards, kettles and bath mats for years!

I have recently bought a Jaguar XK under the approved Jaguar used scheme. Part of the scheme offers a 30 day 1000 mile exchange for another Jaguar of equal or greater value. I apologise for copy and pasting the whole offer but I think it is in two quite distinct parts.

The Jaguar web site starts by saying

"In the unlikely event that your vehicle has a demonstrable fault that cannot be resolved to your satisfaction and the car has covered no more than 1,000 miles from the date of purchase, your car will be replaced free of charge with a car of a similar specification or a refund will be offered. " This is no more than your statutory rights in my view and not an exchange plan - what follows however is...

There are then nine numbered points which state
"1. Subject to the following terms any Jaguar purchased under the Jaguar Approved Used Vehicle programme may be exchanged within 30 days for another of equal value providing that: a. The vehicle is returned to the Dealer from which it was purchased within 30 days of the delivery date.
b. The vehicle has not been driven more than 1,000 miles from the date of delivery.
c. The Jaguar Approved Used Dealer is satisfied that the vehicle is in the same condition as at the time of delivery to the Customer.
d. The vehicle has not been fitted, since delivery, with any Jaguar or other accessories which, in the opinion of the Dealer, detract from its value, or which are not capable of removal without subsequent repairs to the vehicle.
e. The Jaguar Approved Used Dealer is satisfied that the Customer owns the vehicle and is fully entitled to exchange it under this agreement.
f. The Customer is a private or company purchaser and is not a trade purchaser.
2. The Customer may select any vehicle as the replacement provided that:
a. It is of equal or higher price to the original vehicle.
b. It is readily available from the Dealer's own Approved Used stock (or, at the Dealer's discretion, from another Dealer's Approved Used stock).
3. The Dealer is not required to supply a replacement vehicle to the identical specification as the vehicle being exchanged.
4. Where the Customer wishes to exchange his vehicle for a replacement vehicle with a higher price, the Customer must pay the difference to the Dealer.
5. Where the vehicle has been financed through Jaguar Financial Services, any administration costs associated with the termination of the credit agreement shall be borne by the Dealer or Jaguar Financial Services.
6. Where the vehicle has been financed through any other credit source, any and all costs associated with the termination of the credit agreement are the responsibility of the Customer.
7. The Customer will be responsible for any additional costs incurred in the exchange relating to insurance.
8. This Agreement applies only to the vehicle originally purchased under the Jaguar Approved Used Vehicle programme, and not to any replacement vehicle.
9. This agreement does not affect the Customer's statutory rights of purchase.

Jaguar are now saying that although my car has covered less than 1,000 miles, was puchased 14 days ago that they won't exchange it unless it has a demonstrable fault. How is that a 30 day exchange plan? All they seem to be saying is that if you bought a lemon we'll give you an exchange or your money back - BIG DEAL - we'll honour your statutory rights!

What do you think?

Well I've heard plenty of customers complaining that the dealer has NOT given them all of the relevent facts to allow them to make an informed decision, but this is the first time I've come across one complaining that they HAVE :)

They did get it right on the TUD5 1.5 litre engine fitted to the later 106 vehicles.

They used cast iron for the engine block (Al block diesels don't generally work - long term) and made the cooling system largely self-venting with a degas pipe running from the top of the cylinder head to the expansion tank. There is another to vent the top of the radiator. Water pumps do not seem to be a problem although I changed the one in my partner's car at 100k miles as a precaution.

My partner's TUD5 106 has covered 163k miles with no engine attention whatever - other than good routine maintenance including coolant renewal.

The warning display on my dash keeps flagging up that the left brakelight bulb(s) faulty or the left indicator bulb(s) faulty. The fault is accompanied with a bleep and it seems to happen when I apply the footbrake and / or indicator. I have checked all the bulbs and they all work fine. Any ideas? Read more
