The air conditioning has seperate temperature settings for the drivers side and the passengers side. When set at the low temps. (both sides) cold air blows on the drivers side but hot air blows on the passenger side. Any help/advice before I approach a garage would be helpful.

I've been clearing out my garage and found a litre of sealed Castol Fully Synthetic Oil which is dated March 2004. Would it be ok to use this oil to top up the level on my 2001 740i - does synthetic oil have a shelf life and would it be ok to add it to newer oil? Read more
I sent the following query to Honest John and he said I should send it to legal matters and Lucy Bonham Carter might be able to offer me advice. I wonder if you can help? Obviously I was supposed to do something when I sold the car to the garage but I am at a loss as to what I should have done as I completed all the correct formalities with the garage and they sent all the forms to the DVLA two days after completion of the transaction.
Anyway, here is what I wrote to Honest John and your help would be much appreciated.... Read more

In February, I bought my son an 06 registered Astra 1.9CDTi 16v SRi from a local garage. Earlier today, he went on holiday in it to France, and on the way broke down on the French motorway system. He called out a local breakdown garage and was towed to their premises where a faulty alternator was diagnosed. It will take until Thursday for them to obtain and fit a new one. My son has therefore hired a car from the garage to enable him to continue to his holiday destination and will pick up his repaired car on the way back next Friday.
I seem to remember reading recently - it was probably in your excellent column in the Telegraph - that the selling garage is responsible for any faults developing in the first six months after purchase. If this is so, please could you let me know the appropriate leglation that should be quoted to the selling garage. I would also be interested to know the extent of any claim that can be made against the garage - just the cost of the repair, or will the cost of breakdown recovery and car hire also be able to be claimed?
Any advice you can give would be very much appreciated. Many thanks Read more
Depending on the price he paid for the car (in relation to market value) & the mileage, he could have a strong case for obtaining the cost of repair from the seller - let's face it, he could not realistically be expected to bring the car back to Blighty to ask the seller to fix it.
However, what sort of person drives around Europe WITHOUT breakdown cover - clearly someone who gives more consideration to the money he has to spend on his San Miguel that to the likelyhood of breakdown & the consequenses thereof. ...
Hi I have a low mileage Peugeot expert van. The milometer first started only showing the top or bottom half of the led reading. However it has now stopped working all-together. I have taken the instrument panel out to check for any loose fitting but nothing. My question is, if I fit a second hand instrument panel will it still show my low mileage or will it show the mileage of the last vehicle it was in? Read more

My cars are XMs but I think the fuse box is the same. There are two long bolts that go right through it, not very easy to get at but once you have removed them you can lift the box up but not far because of all the wires connected to it.
Interested in the latest HJ response regarding plastic and/or paper driving licenses for hiring cars abroad. I have hired cars many times abroad on business using the paper license only: in fact I don't even have a plastic one. The paper one plus passport seems to work well enough .... Read more
The old ones are still legal so to speak so they should not pose a problem in legal terms but in practical terms you may have increasing problems as time progresses.

What is really strange is that the Panda gets an extra star. The Panda will have the same engine (and immobiliser), and probably the same locks. So I'm not sure how they come up with their ratings.

According to the "OIL BIBLE".....Synthetic oil can be used no matter how old it is, its a differant matter for mineral oil, dont use it if its over 20 years of age. During the Eighties a lot of cars had their oil turning to sludge, the finger was pointed at the oil companies who changed the formulation and blending techniques which led to the development of better mineral oils and the introduction of Semi- Synthetic and fully synthetic oils, this solved the problem through to recent years where the problem has again reared its ugly head, sludging is on the increase again because oil is being overworked because car manufacturers are fitting small 4 ltr capacity sumps to engines were 10 years ago a 5 ltr sump was commonplace. Oil is overworked in these modern turbo engines with small sumps so changing ahead of manufacturers specs is best.
