My non-turbo 1.9D starts fine first thing in the morning, and if it's left for an hour or so, it's also ok.
The problem is when the car has been left for 4 - 8 hours, then it can take up to 4 attempts to start. It cranks fine, and it seems to make no difference if I keep my foot off the accelerator or press down on it - I seem to have to crank it doe 10 seconds, switch off, try again (after the glowplugs have heated, and eventually it will start.
There again, sometimes it starts on first turn of the key!
Given the above, I'm reasonably sure it's not an air leak into the fuel system. - but then again I'm not very clever! Read more
I have recently purchased a ?06 petrol Focus 1.6 Sport (1.6L chain-cam Duratec 100PS) which has done around 30k. I am struggling to get much above 30mpg on my run to work which is around 8 miles on town roads even when driving as softly/carefully as possible. On longer journeys of around 220 miles I am getting about 36-38mpg at 70mph. The engine is idling at around 9000rpm (when warm) which seams high compared to my old 51 plate 1.6 Corrolla, plus if I coast to a ?stop? the Focus continues to drive forward, albeit very slowly, when in 1st gear without me touching any peddles ? all previous car I have had would of stalled. Does this all sound right or do you think I might have a problem? Read more
Thank you for everybody helpful comments.
Tyres are at the correct pressure so I have booked in for a service inc. new spark plugs, filters etc.
My MPG is calculated on paper for either brim to brim or for a couple of 220mile trips as I have no trip computer in this model.
Been doing some reading and starting to wish I went for the 1.6 ti-VCT engine as it sounds much more economical.
hi all, is there anyone in the middx area who has the gadget that can code injectors? my glow plug light is flashing and my 130bhp mondeo is underpowered. Im certain its a faulty injector, but i think maybe the ECU has lost the code, and it can be recoded. What software would i need to do this myself? Or does anyone have it and can do it for cash? I dont want to take it to ford because i would rather pay an enthusiast. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks Read more
Hi,I have just bought a new 59 plate Ford Mondeo Titatium X with delivery miles on the clock from Arnold Clark in Leyland. The car is perfect in every way but i didn't receive a second key with the salesman stating that the second key would arrive by recorded delivery to them and they would forward it on by recorded delivery to me.They said that this usually takes about a week.
Has anyone else had this thing happen to them.Is it normal practice or am i being fobbed off whereas i'll never receive the key?

Update again.
I received a £50 cheque from Arnold Clark customer services as promised above. Its a pity that the place i bought it from didn't rate customer service as high as their main office.
Hi there, first post so please be gentle. I've found this forum via a web search and I hope someone can help me!
I've got a 54 reg VW Touran 1.9 Diesel which has done approx 53k, I was driving it home the other day and the accelerator just stopped working properly and my car slowed down with very little to no resistance from the accelerator. No lights came on, on my dashboard. I pulled over, turned the car off and then on again and when in neutral the car rev's fine but when you put it into gear the car will drive but extremely sluggishly!
I managed to get home and rang a local garage who initially thought it may the air flow meter that is wrong with it, they have checked this and confirmed that it is not. The garage is now saying there is a problem with the Turbo and they think it could be the wastegate?! My main concern is, the guy at the garage seems very vague about the problem and when I told him this afternoon that I had googled about this issue he started asking me how to fix it! (I am rubbish at car issues, so you can imagine how far my knowledge stretches to!)
Has anyone ever experienced this issue, if it is indeed this or have any suggestions as to what else it could be and know to fix it? I'm concerned about getting charged over the odds for a problem which it may not even be and wondering how much it is likely to cost to mend?
Thanks in advance - I hope! Read more

Have you received any joy in solving the proble? My Touran did exactly the same thing last week and is now standing...seem to be expensive to fix?
Hope you can give me some valuable advice!...
The boss drove through a pot hole and knackered a wheel. The insurance company have been very good and covered the cost but said I could do what I liked with the cheque as the OEM alloy is £500. I can get 4 Zito alloys for less than that if I want but am wondering whether I should stick to originals. The car is 5 years old and I will be looking to sell within the next 6-9 months.
Any thoughts?

Are there any cars still available with full size spares?
A full size spare is available on a Focus for £77. Well worth it in my opinion.
Hi all,
The central locking of my boot will not lock is there a fuse to change or does the lock need changing. have to drive and leave it parked with unlocked. (or its like its permenently locked but won't lock on to the catch). It started intermitently but now constant.

Gem unit would be my last choice for this fault.Get a techie to check the electric latch mechanism and also the rubber "paddle " switch ,which is very often the problem with the boot system on these.hth
Can any readers please help with a gearbox question?
1. Is the Suzuki Swift 1.5 auto gearbox a 'traditional' type or one of the newer automated manual ones, such as the Yaris? I have a Yaris auto which I would like to change for a Swift auto as the former is not, in my view, very user friendly. By which I mean that frequently it doesn't change up when the revs are saying 'change up' and vice versa. When cold and in our hilly locality I tend to use it in manual mode to save aggravation. I also have a CRV auto ('02) on which the gearbox is, again in my view, superb.

Many thanks for the above additional comments.
Hi. I was stopped at some lights the other day, put my foot on the clutch pedal, heard a snapping sound, followed by a metallic sounding 'chink' and then felt what turned out to be 2 sections of a broken heavy duty spring (a quadrant spring with 2 'j' type ends I think it's called) fall down onto the floor mat. The car was fine to continue driving, the only effect being what seemed like a slightly heavier operation but I'm not even certain that isn't just my imagination now. Anyway popped into the main dealer and they said they'd never known anything like this happen but that the spring can't be replaced, it has to be the whole pedal assembly (@ c. £140). They say the part would have to be ordered from Japan, that I'd need to pay for it in advance and that they can't even give a rough timescale for it to arrive until a few days after I've ordered it. To make matters worse, they can't give a price for fitting as they've never had to do it before and it's not a job listed on their system. Does this sound feasible? Obviously I'm trying to find out more hence my post here. I can still drive the car but don't want to risk a more serious breakage at some point if I don't have to so will be using it as little as possible for now. Seems a whole lot of cost and hassle for a broken spring! Any thoughts/advice welcome. Cheers. Read more
Thanks everyone - yes I'll find out about getting a spare one just in case.... Yup - £50 is only about 30 mins labour sadly......
Hi. I have noticed at between 75 - 80mph that my car has developed a vibration which is felt through the floor and the seat of my pants. When it dips under 75 it runs smoothly. The car has done 89000 miles. Read more
Seems the left hand drive shaft is on the way out according to my dealer. But he wont take my money (yep! that is unusual) because he says it is borderline. Well at least I know now.

When you park it at night, is it sloping downhill? If so that could be masking the effect of air ingress. Next time it wont start, pump the primer until its hard and try again, if it starts, its air. The only other thing that I can think of is a sticking fuel solonoid valve.
