04 1.9 Turbo issues - Wastegate?!? - Nessa_81
Hi there, first post so please be gentle. I've found this forum via a web search and I hope someone can help me!

I've got a 54 reg VW Touran 1.9 Diesel which has done approx 53k, I was driving it home the other day and the accelerator just stopped working properly and my car slowed down with very little to no resistance from the accelerator. No lights came on, on my dashboard. I pulled over, turned the car off and then on again and when in neutral the car rev's fine but when you put it into gear the car will drive but extremely sluggishly!

I managed to get home and rang a local garage who initially thought it may the air flow meter that is wrong with it, they have checked this and confirmed that it is not. The garage is now saying there is a problem with the Turbo and they think it could be the wastegate?! My main concern is, the guy at the garage seems very vague about the problem and when I told him this afternoon that I had googled about this issue he started asking me how to fix it! (I am rubbish at car issues, so you can imagine how far my knowledge stretches to!)

Has anyone ever experienced this issue, if it is indeed this or have any suggestions as to what else it could be and know to fix it? I'm concerned about getting charged over the odds for a problem which it may not even be and wondering how much it is likely to cost to mend?

Thanks in advance - I hope!

Could be a number of things - not enough to go on as yet. You need fault codes read and possibly live data looked at.
Dont like the sound of that garage, take to a VW specialist who knows what hes doing.

Would these fault codes come from the car being hooked up to a computer?

The garage has a good reputation and have heard good things about it, hence me taking it there.

I can't really get it and take it to a VW garage as its in parts at this garage so am really unsure as to what to do...

' its in parts at this garage so am really unsure as to what to do '

Why have they got it in parts when they seem to have no idea of the problem.
As WS Tech says, you need to get the car hooked up to a VAG-COM computer to find the fault codes first.
A skilled tech will use them to point him in the right direction.
The garage mentions the turbo wastegate, but would have expected this engine to have a VNT turbo, so no wastegate.
It just points to your garage having little knowledge of this car.

Have you received any joy in solving the proble? My Touran did exactly the same thing last week and is now standing...seem to be expensive to fix?

Hope you can give me some valuable advice!
