please read this and i would like opinions

heres my hat nailed on the hook............hj has now twice said once in yesterdays DT and in the link that 30% of drivers cant afford insurance,i totally disagree i think you will find they dont want to pay ,it might be expensive it might be something you never need but its the law of the land that at least third party insurance has to be in place in this country unless you can afford to self insure.
Why should insurers lower their ratings for young male drivers when its their own driving skills or lack of them that we see daily on our congested roads and up lamposts, its a govt issue that needs remedying not an insurance lowering that we need
i well remember my insurance was far more than i could afford when i started on the road but i insured and managed to keep my licence clean Read more

When my son was looking for his first car many years ago, I pointed out a deal that was available at the time for a new car with free insurance for young drivers. I cannot remember exactly what car it was but it was a smallish engined supermini. It was not much more than he was proposing to pay for a used car. But no, he bought a Rover 216 coupe with all the normal extras, large alloys, big bore exhaust, a bit of engine modding, racing seats, small steering wheel, 500 watt sound system etc etc. Insurance was £3000+ pa and it was a money leeching wreck. The cost of the car including insurance and repairs was way over what the new car would have cost.

However, he would not be seen dead in the "sensible" car although he came close to it in the Rover on a couple of occasions. I was looking at it from a practical veiwpoint which didn't go down well. Oh well, you can but try....

We have a fiesta which occassionally drops out of 2nd Gear on the overun in low speed driving. This has been happening now for 18 months and with the annual Ford service imminent, I am wondering whether to ask the dealer to adjust the gear change, with 35000 genuine miles i would be surprised if there is much wear in the gearbox.

What advice can anyone give me?

Thanks very much for the response Mickeybo. Much appreciated.

Recently my focus has picked up a tapping noise from the top of the engine when running, any ideas of what could be the cause of this?
Thanks in advance Read more

My money would still be on an injector, as the tappets hardly ever get seriously noisy on these engines even at the stated mileage. The low mpg is quite easily caused by this also .

Hello there. Recently the ABS light came on my dash, I had it diagnosed and the problem was with one of the rear sensors which had become damaged, I replaced the sensor but the ABS warning light has stayed on.

I have already tried disconnecting the battery overnight, to no avail.

Does anyone know if this faut should clear itself after I drive a few miles?

Or do I have to actually delete the fault code? and if so, is there anyway I can do this myself without taking it to a garage?

Right, PROBLEM SOLVED!! Took it to the garage, they cleared the code, warning lights went off, went for a drive, lights came back on, turns out that it was not only the sensor but the reluctor ring as well that was damaged...Thanks to you all for your input, even if some of it did seem a little patronising!

Just to ask what people recommend for this job. Dealers seem to squirt some spray grease in the general direction once a year, but this must be totally inadequate for such a heavily worked mechanism. I doubt that the grease ever even reaches the contact surfaces. And nothing ages a car quite like doors that drop half an inch when you open them... Thanks for any suggestions! Read more

That's not the check strap that's the hinge pins!

I see the title is ambiguous ? meant it to mean: lube of the hinges and checkstraps :o)

I think its fair to say that all over the country, the roads are full of potholes and some serious ones at that. Now, although the roads were not ideal prior to the cold snap its fair to say many of these are as a result of this cold snap.

Its easy to criticise Councils and expect them to get out there and fix them all immediately but in reality that can't work due to manpower, budgets etc.

So unless the Govt wave a magic billion extra pounds to the Councils for road fixing, how do you suggest they go about repairing these?

Would it be a suggestion for each council to do a survey and then publish a plan of works ie. here are the priorities and here is the list of the roads we will fix this week?

Its easy for us all to moan but I am not so sure what the solution is. In the past you could report a serious large pothole and it would get filled that day but now there are so many of these seriously large potholes you wonder how they prioritise them!

When my friend from the council used to do emergency repairs to pot holes on the A34 that had been reported, it was basically park the lorry on the verge, put on flashing beacons, fill shovel with tar, aim for a gap in the traffic and then run out into the road and chuck it in the hole and flatten down the best he could with his shovel in the time available before the next car / lorry came along and get out the way pretty sharpish. The rest of the flattening down was taken care by the vehicles that then came thundering by. Scary stuff.

I was thinking of buying a 2.0 diesel Mondeo, and was wondering what is the difference between these 2 diesels ?

I assume that the TDCi is going to be phased out as it is the old mondeo engine, but is the Duratorq and completely new unit and is it very much better ? Read more

The 2.0 and 2.2 are relatively new engines so will be in the range for
a long time.

There is a new version of the 2.0 on the way, 163 bhp and very eco, I wonder if the 2.2 will continue alongside this or will itself get a power boost.

Hi

I've just had a yellow warning light come up. In the book it says it is "exhaust emissions" warning light. RAC came out and read it on the computer and it said "manifold atmospheric pressure sensor fault".

RAC didn't look beyond reading the computer, but said safe to drive home even though had an 80 mile journey. It did drive home okay though.

Am I safe to drive this for another 4 days (160 mile return each day) as I can't get it to a garage before this? I'm clueless as to what the manifold pressure is! EPC light came on also but went out on its own.

Does anyone know what VW would charge to diagnose what the fault is and give a quote for repair? (RAC said only a VW computer would tell more about the fault).

Many thx. Read more

Although a diag test has logged a fault with the map sensor I would be
very surprised if this is actually the problem. This trouble code is often set by a
problem with breather /vacuum hoses split or perished and possibly a dirty throttle body. Also the
map sensor can suffer oil contamination and just needs a clean out.hth

totally agree with above, apart from cleaning of sensor. Quite a few weve cleaned seem to come back faulty. We cleaned them with brake cleaner (bit less agressive than carb cleaner) but they seem to get permanently damaged once oil gets into them.

Hiya, Im hoping someone out there may be able to help. I have an 03 renault laguna 1.9dci privelage it had an intermitent fault where when your driving it very briefly looses complete power like the engine has cut out then just as quick as it happened it carries on as normal. someone reccomended cleaning the egr valve which i did using carb cleaner, i cleaned as much of it as possible and put it all back together again. that seems to have solved the problem of the cut out issues but now has a different fault. When driving it almost feels like the car has very little power to what it had before i cleaned the egr and takes a while for the turbo to kick in. then when aproaching motorway speeds it splutters a little and a message appears on display saying "fault in fuel injection" and then continues in limp home mode until the engine is switched off and back on again which clears the fault untill were back up to speed where it happens all over again. I look forward to your advice and comments.

many thanks

matt. Read more
