Door hinge, checkstrap lubrication - dimdip
(non model-specific)

Just to ask what people recommend for this job. Dealers seem to squirt some spray grease in the general direction once a year, but this must be totally inadequate for such a heavily worked mechanism. I doubt that the grease ever even reaches the contact surfaces. And nothing ages a car quite like doors that drop half an inch when you open them... Thanks for any suggestions!

As an example
Mk2 Punto`s tend to wear the check straps - leading to a cracking sound when opening the door. This despite spray on grease.
I fitted a new strap - but `worked` the pin in Mobil1 0w40 before fitting. I now just give it a drop of oil on the pin (and door hinges) every now and then, from the oil can, which is full of this synthetic oil.

No further problems.

I think good spray grease is handy for providing a water/salt repellant covering to the hinge, but i tend to lubricate the hinges with thick oil first...
engine or preferably gearbox oil and letting that work it's way in, i used 90 gear oil on exposed screw lifters, it took a long time to wash off whereas the recommended expensive stuff the body manufacturer sold..;) would vanish once it rained.

Not many door hinges fitted with grease nipples anymore..;)

Shame -- they would be ideal...

I use a smear of Castrol LM grease on top and bottom faces of strap and some light oil on the pivots. At least my local Vauxhall dealer does something similar at service time. The local VW/Audi dealer seams to think that white grease sprayed over the outside of the hinges should suffice - if our company fleet is anything to go by.

i use copperslip with whats left on my little brush after doing the wheel nuts and the back of the pads....

That's not the check strap, that's the hinge pins!

Lubricating the check strap won't stop the door from dropping!

I see the title is ambiguous ? meant it to mean: lube of the hinges and checkstraps :o)
