I put forward the the `smart phone` - as you may know, I`ve been getting used to one this last week.

1) you can phone for help
2)Text for help
3)Skype for help
4) Morse code at night for help, with the flash (was it a candle at 20+ miles)

5) Flog it to someone passing by and use the money to go home in a taxi
6) Google maps + built in Sat detection, (find your way out of the Blair Witch Woods) soon to be charge free Sat Nav - thus giving all the dedicated Nav players the boot.
7) You could short out the battery to start a fire to semaphore/smoke signal for help.

Any more?
Or you may not want help, but instead could offer help, amusement or irritation on forums all around the world - from that remote swamp - with just a transmitter poking over the nearby ridge.

That thing has a vague resemblance to a Mini Moke.

That's what I thought when I first saw it.

The speed (60mph) and range (100 miles) don't look that radical - can't he do an electric F1 instead? :-)

Post Office/Royal mail strikes

DVLA states

Postal Strike

DVLA is closely monitoring the Postal Strike to make sure that it does all it can to minimise disruption to its customers.

If you need to renew vehicle tax or declare a vehicle off-road, you can do it online or by phone. You can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road while displaying your old tax disc for up to five working days, provided you have applied for a new disc before the old one expires. Read more

Nothing to do with the strikes;it's been in the system since on-line taxing was introduced. >>

Ditto as per jc2.
The 5 day "grace" has been mentioned a number of times previously on this forum.

I know motorists and cyclists are not always best buddies, but hopefully some of these photos of amazingly bad cycle lanes will provoke a smile of sympathy

Hi,

I was thinking of buying a 1.3 Jimny Jeep - 2003 with 28k on the clock.

It has only had two services in it's life - should I be concerned. I always service my vehicles annually regardless of mileage cover, so this seems low to me. Any advice appreciated.

Also, does the 2003 model have a rubber cambelt or chain. I seem to recall they changed.

Cheers

If it`s only had two oil changes over 28,000 miles and 6 years the engine might be full of oil sludge with associated wear. Why not buy another?

Just out of interest, when was the last oil change? Was it after the first year, five years ago, to keep the warranty?

Well,
I suspect that I might be better to wait until 2010, unless super dooper offers pre end '09

I have a couple of cars to buy in the near future, including one supermini type car that I could do with buying perhaps at the beginning of the 10 registration issue in March.

I'm hoping that the softening of the German market as their scrappage scheme has ended will free things up a bit - predictions are that the German market will be decimated over the next 12 months.

I've been looking at cars lately, and don't know anything about Proton as a brand but they look quiet reasonable but have really varied reviews - what do you all think? Does anyone have any views? If you were to compare them to another car, any ideas so I can get a feel? Thanks!

I'd have a Proton if it were cheap enough. But when you can get a used VW Phaeton for the price......................

The Facts.
In traffic, a car slowly drove past from the other direction - driver and passenger wearing white full face masks. (looked like a plain form of Halloween mask) Did a double take of course and inadvertently held `eye` contact in doing so. this was followed by a vigorous head shaking - by him, or her, not me..

Value Judgments.
Of course a situation ripe for them - potential leaders perhaps being young people, or people with something to hide - criminals perhaps.

But it could have been Auntie Nellie and Uncle Bill. Both 70+ and out for a bit of fun. Perhaps kicking back at an ageist society and constant ageist comments on the `internet` about how they are mimsers who can`t drive or turn their heads to see behind - and so on. (sound familiar?)

The Law.
What if the eye holes in the masks were big enough not to impede vision at all as drivers? Furthermore, what if we all put one on when leaving the house and kept swapping them?

That would give `Big Brother` a poke in the (cameras) eyes, surely.

The Equality.
All Citizens the same and able to wear the mask of a Duke, Donkey or Judge. (or an alternative category)

The FUN.
Lend me the mask Auntie Nellie - I`m off to burn some donuts outside Mc Donalds. Read more

Sounds good (although it would be an offence if you were actually trying to do something illegal).

I did not know that mcdonalds sell such fare as doughnuts. However, I have never been in one of the places, and the offer of overcooked doughnuts is not good enough to tempt me.

I have MK1 1961 MGBGT which i restored for my daughteras 21. After a few years left in the workshop unused, i decided to re mot it. Driving to the garage i tested the brakes to get them warmed up, when suddenly there was this thump thump noise, found out later it was the fan hitting the radiator, i must of put the brakes on really hard because the engine moved forward about 1/2 inch.
Well from that point on the engine will not start. The timing keeps changing, I have had a mechanic it for 7 hours with all sorts of theories. We even had propane gas run into the carbs to tell if they are leaking(an very old trick and it works), I changed the head gasket. carbs(second hand) but still nothing. Just pops and bangs. We set the timing tio TCD and try to start
then we double check and the rotor arm has changed its positon.
Theory: The front keyway on the timing chain has broken????????????????Don,t really want to go there unless sure.ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEA.s????????????????

DD. My thirty-year-old daughter had to be pulled up for writing "must of" before her A levels. She knows better now.

My old '60s Vitesse suffered from the engine fan driving into the radiator during an emergency stop. The restraint wire from the gearbox to the chassis (we're going back a long way here) had corroded through.

It does seem strange we haven't heard from the OP lately.

Durelli_tyres

Hi,

I have heard there are Hyundai dealers that are no longer taking orders on the i10 as they have such a backlog.

I also heard the backlog is 6000 cars.

Do you think that is 6000 i10s on order at 1 dealership? Or 6000 on order in the country at present?

Sorry to leave you all in suspense, had to go out (though not to sit in the boot!)

I have occasional employment at National Hunt meetings, these fixtures are invariably held in the winter and racecourses are second only to airfields in terms of wind chill factor.

The only available shelter in inclement weather is my vehicle and my now sadly departed Volvo offered ample and comfortable accommodation under the rear hatch plus a light which could be switched off. The Hyundai falls far short but it's still better than standing in the open.

In the absence of a visible microswitch I will have to try to obtain a fitting of the same size which incorporates a on/off switch or extend the wiring to an external switch (my electrical background scoffs at the easy option of taking the bulb out)

Thanks for all comments........
