Handbrake hasn't been working that well lately and also back wheels would seize sometimes when it's been parked for a few days in the rain.

So today I changed the back shoes (which were quite worn), but now the handbrake seems worse. I reckon the adjusters are OK (could hear them ratchet up when I first checked it) and the cables seem to run OK, so looking for some ideas. Footbrake working fine. If anything, slightly better since the job was done.

BTW, drums weren't in brilliant shape, though not scored just lipped at the edge.

Is there anything special about the dipstick on the CRV ? My engine started running badly occasionally on Saturday so I stopped, checked under the bonnet and with no other signs of problems I checked the oil using the dipstick and it appeared empty. Having added 5L to it and turning the motor over for 30 secs I rechecked it and there was still nothing. I then headed for home but after leaving the car in a car park for 15 mins, when I restarted it, there was a heavy rattling noise from the engine. I used the motor to get the car out of the car park and then called a breakdown truck. Still waiting for local Honda to check the car but they say it sounds like the motor is wrecked.

I was surprised that apart from the rough running, there were no signs/warnings on the dashboard. If I was reading the dipstick correctly and there was no oil showing, where had it gone ? There were no spills under the car and nothing visible in the engine bay

Correcting typo

I would have expected to have had some warning.

I picked up my QQ 1.5 Pure Drive DCI Accenta in early August this year and have clocked nearly 3000 miles and so far not had any probs.
6 gears took a little bit of getting used to but soon got the hang of it.
6th gear 80mph all day if it could and approx 49 mpg ain't at all bad for the size of the car.
Hand brake now needs taking up a bit but thats no hassle.
Fold away for parking W/Mirrors are handy as I have seen what sloppy drivers can do.
Big W/Mirrors combined with the parking sensor are enough to get over the rear view, or lack of it.
Great chunky feel to it and doors that close with a clunk instead of like a tin can makes it feel real solid.
I am over 6 foot tall so hitting my head a couple of times on the tailgate makes me bend a bit more, problem solved.
The driving position is great for tall people with long legs so it suits me.
This is my first post so I would like to say hi to all car lovers and happy motoring.

Clever.

Glad you like the car. I've a 2.0 2WD Acenta CVT which I'm very pleased with.

I think the servicing looks a bit expensive but heigh-ho.

Hi I have an Audi A4 1996 1.8 petrol and it to seems to have a prob. It had a fault when I got it of starting and then stopping straight away, but then all of a sudden it would go. I tried to trace it but being an intermittent fault made it impossible at the time. All this summer its been a peach and not played up at all. Now however that the rain is falling the problem is back! I suspect damp. I found the area where the battery sits full of water (blocked drain hole), I have a fault code 18010 low voltage at B+ and 17978 which is not listed in the book that came with the scanner, great! Also I have on the dash LCD something new this time which reads "ln l" anybody know what it means?
At the moment I have the battery on charge and trying to dry the car out a little. I have seen this fault on forums before but not got to the bottom of it.

***If anyone knows what the mystery VAG code 17978 and dash code is please tell.***

Apart from that its a great motor and handles well for an estate. Read more

Many thanks, seems 17978 means engine start blocked by immobilizer.

Can anyone help here....
I am finding that i start my mazda 6 diesel estate in the morning and then within a few hundred yards - it cuts out when you take you foot off the accelerator pedal. The fuel sediment light comes on.
Once restarted, it normally behaves fine and there is plenty of pull in the car etc....the problem seems to be when the engine is cold only and its guarenteed to cut out probably once everytime.

I had the sediment light come on a few months back so i took off the fuel filter and drained it but didnt notice any water in the diesel. Put it back and all was fine until now. Do people think it is a bad batch of fuel i have got and this is causing the problem or?? Why would water in the filter only effect a cold engine?

Could it be the engine temperature sensor? If so - does the car have a seperate sensor for the management system compared to the dash indicator - because the dash indicator behaves normally.

Does the sediment filter light come directly from the sensor under the filter or via the engine management system....in which case, are there other reasons this could light?

Also - i always do my own servicing and drop the oil every 8000 miles. I have never had anything reset on the management system....is there need to on a pre facelift model?

Thanks in advance.

Just an update - i changed the fuel filter, didnt see any water in it but changed it anyway.
I think the sediment filter light always comes on when the engine is not running....i even unplugged the sensor and noticed that this is the case.....hence im now ruling out the filter/sediment sensor for the cause of the engine cutting out.

I have also run some injector cleaner through the fuel and i think it has made some difference but not alot...the engine still cuts when cold occasionally...

Has anyone got any ideas????

My elderly neighbour asked me if I could reset the car clock in his new Ford Ka.
He'd apparently tried himself but managed to depart from the English language.Prodding and scrolling revealed it was in Dutch. By a process of elimination and comparing the series of menus with the English manual I worked out that Dutch for language was Taal (don't hold me to it). On return to English the time setting was easy.
I trust a bottle of something will be on its way at Xmas.

Hi,

I want to replace the factory fitted headlights on my 2000 Honda Accord SE Executive with halo projector headlights. I cant seem to find a UK dealer. There seem to be plenty from the US online, but a few have said that their parts may not fit my car as it is a UK version and their parts are for the US version. The shape ooks the same though..

Can anyone help please?

Thanks Read more

Hondas in UK & USA can be very different cars even built in the same year!

When a Car manufacturer acknowledges that a problem has occured with a vehicle. Then when you take it in to the dealer they ring the Manufacturer who in turn acknowledge the problem. They then say they are working on a fix. How long do you think one should wait for that fix to come. Read more

it entirely depends on the nature and severity of the problem.

Having driven the Honda CRV now for 6 months. I find the key is a bit annoying at times. The reason i bring this to discussion is:- Previousley for a number of years i have owned VW group cars in particular a Passat & an Octavia. Both of these cars came with in my mind a infinately superior key system transponder or whatever the correct name is. The reason i say this is because the keys on the VW group cars folded in onthemselfs into the transponder holding. The Honda key does not just like many other manufacturers. What you get is quite a large key poking about in your pocket, its not as easy to carry. Should you open a door or tailgate when you have something else in your other hand, you can easily scratch the vehicle. The VW group cars i owned definately had a more superior key system why aren't all cars made with keys like this. Does anyone know of other manufacturers who make keys like the VW group. Saying that Daughter has an Ibiza and that doesnt fold in. But them keys that fold in are defo better. Read more

I only got one. I never carry the spare with me its at home locked away. If im at work a long way from home and i cant get this key in, suppose Honda assistance would help, They did when the petrol flap wouldn't open just call em out eh.
