If you bumped your car (i.e. a family member reversed into your car) but had it fixed without going through insurance ? would you tell the person buying the car as and when you sold it?
Would you tell??? - OldSock
In a word - "no"
Would you tell??? - FotheringtonThomas
Not from the POV of insurance. Why should you?

Its just Im in process of buying a car I know has been reversed into by the sellers ex ? she doesn?t know I know but is saying the car has never had an accidents ? just worried now about buying the car.
Would you tell??? - maz64
Was the bump serious enough to require work doing on it, and if so, how much?

EDIT: sorry I can see it was 'fixed' but what did that entail?

Well this is my problem. Only after going onto a certain website I found a picture of my potential car with comments under it. The owner had written ?after her little accident? and then went onto say after my boyfriend had reversed into it ? so she doesn?t know I know about this ?accident? and don?t have a clue how much damage was done. Talk about putting a spanner in the works. Saying that Ive got a tiny crack in my bumper ? if I was to repair it and sell it, I wouldn?t mention it as it wasn?t an ?accident?. Ive had a hpi check done on the car and its clear.

Hard to give advice without seeing it, but a professionally repaired parking bump would not usually put me off buying a car, if everything else was OK. Can you use your knowledge to lower the price a bit? Doesn't inspire confidence in the honesty of the seller, though.

Hm, you're wondering what else she might not've told you about, I suppose...

If you can see the repair, you could try asking her about it ("I just noticed...") , and listening to what she has to say ;)

Lets's take it to the next level. I recently went to look at car on private sale by the second owners, a respectable couple who had bought it at very low mileage with a story that the first owner was a motability customer who hardly used the car before passing away. The car was spotless, drove well but had a few curious minor faults, including evidence of water leaks. It was priced optimistically. Before starting to negotiate, I rang HPI and guess what? It was a Cat D total loss before they bought it. The nice couple looked genuinely horrified - but what do they tell the next buyer?

Heh heh - the gender gap personified methinks !

Same scenario with two blokes would result in the purchaser using terms like "you lying toad" etc........

Nothing controversial in it that I can think of!

In this instance if the damage is not serious. The information you have use this to get a better price, if they don't come down in price walk away from the deal.
Would you tell??? - *123*
well I've already agreed the price with her - the price has been brought down considerably and it's a very good deal should the aa inspection still go ahead ....

I've also had a recent hpi check done on the car and its clear...
Would you tell??? - bathtub tom
You're suspicious enough to get a professional inspection.

If you really want it, I'd suggest you show the picture of the damage to whoever inspects it and ask them to have a particularly close look in that area. If everything else checks out OK, you can then go to your 'friend' and say 'he found this damage repair you didn't mention' and adjust the price accordingly.

You say "the price has been brought down considerably and it's a very good deal". Perhaps you 'friend' knows something that will seriously affect its price on the open market?

Only if asked.

As the man in the trade says: 'They've all had paint sir...'
This is partly about the information revolution, isn't it? Who would be daft enough to post a pic of their damaged car on a networking website, then try and sell it to someone they know?
Would you tell??? - *123*
The car is worth a decent amount of money and because Im buying private - thats the reason why Im having an inspection done - plus any parts which need replacing will be very expensive - just covering my back!

I dont know the seller personally - the car (and colour) is rare and came across it when looking for something else ...
Would you tell??? - *123*
The picture on the 'site' isnt of it damaged - just a comment underneath saying something like after her little accident ...
Would you tell??? - adam f
What car / year is it and how much are you paying?

Why not just tell her the truth, Victoria?

Pat
Would you tell??? - *123*
Just spoken to her - apparently it was cosmetic damage only and shes given me the details of the company who did the work so that I can speak to them about it if I want to. Graze on the front bumper was the only damage. Just wait until AA inspection is done.

Why not just tell her the truth Victoria?
that would be a first from a private seller wouldn't it

yes i know..

sellers/ private never tell the truth, had one last week lovely car bla bla bla, took it up the road wouldnt go over 10mph how she drove the thing i will never know or maybe she never did drive it
if you are happy with the car just use it as your ace in any future converations when she starts boasting what a good deal she gave you
its always better to be in front than behind

This makes an interesting addition to the usual list of checks to do when buying a car privately. You say you found the details on a certain website. I am guessing that is either a motoring / make specific website forum thing, or a social networking site like Facebook etc.

So as well as doing hpi etc, check online to see what you can find about the seller, their hobbies and by chance maybe something about their cars!!!

I remember a link recently to a specialist car, can't remember which model, but was being sold as genuine but in reality it transpired there was a huge, and I mean huge, long thread about it on an owners's forum about that specific car and all its issues - maybe the Vauxhall VX220 I think?
Would you tell??? - adam f
Yes your right - it went global and the chap who was selling lives around the corner from me. People started turning up to his brothers garage to take "undercpver" pics of the car.
