I'm laying it up for the winter in the garage. Is there anything I can coat the discs with to stop them rusting?

I remember many years ago I bought a carcoon for the bike. It never worked by the way - corrosion and mould everythwere. But anyway, with it came an aerosol of rust prevention stuff, and on the label it said can be used on brake discs without affecting anything when it came to driving it again. Anyone know what it was, or what I can use instead? Read more

Just found this interesting webpage:

www.ausetute.com.au/corrosion.html

It explains why when steel rusts it forms pits, I had always wondered why steel and iron didn't rust evenly.

Hi
Can anyone tell me where the brake load sensing valve linkage is located as it has failed the MOT on it.
Thanks

it will need unseizing very very carefully or the bracket will break
they were a fortune for the earlier corsa so takes your times on it

I've just put my Micra through the MOT - the HC was near the 200 PPM limit.

All the other emissions figures were well withing limits.

Does anyone know what caused the high HC PPM?

Can it be fixed or should I start looking for another car when the next MOT approaches? Read more

When I had this it was exhaust valves.

The car had been to a tyre place under a previous owner and they'd shimmed the valves. All the tolerances were far too tight and one exhaust valve had no gap!

I suspect they'd got their maths wrong and reduced the gaps instead of increasing them.

I had the head off, ground in the valves (one new exhaust) and re-shimmed them all correctly. It transformed the car, you could balance a pound coin on it at tickover and the low-end torque was amazing.

I assume you meant 'perpetrator' rather than victim.

hi all. my car is playing up again and i wonder if i could seek some advice prior to taking it to a garage.

for the last couple of months when i have switched my car on it has, every so often (a couple of times a month), juddered with no revs. when i have pressed the accelerator there is no noise but the rev counter goes up slightly.

but since the weather has become colder, if left for a couple of hours or more, it wont start first time. so i will turn on the ignition and get the usual warning lights of handbrake, battery and oil can. then i turn it over and either starts and immediately cuts out back to the first lights. or it doesnt start at all and when i take the pressure off the ignition it goes straight back to the initial warning lights. its also doing the juddering thing on almost every start up too.

there are no engine management lights.

its just like i have no petrol in. except it does it on all petrol levels. even today with a full tank.

then i turn off all the extras, ie, lights, seat heaters, fans, cd player. i try it again and it usually starts at that point, if not first time then second time.

i have had the battery tested by kwikfit and they say it is running at 77% which they say means it doesnt require replacing as that is plenty.

sometimes (once or twice a month) the car will cut out while im driving at any speed. but that might be my fault if iv not got the gear ratio correct for the speed. i have mentioned it in case it might be relevant.

does anyone have any ideas? i dont want to take it to a garage until i have had a couple of ideas as i dont want to be ripped off and i do not know a decent ford garage in my area as all of them have tried it on with me at some point or other.

thanks in advance

Whilst driving back from Dover last weekend on the M26 just by the Dover services I had an odd thing happen.

There I was minding my own business in lane 3 doing just over 70, maybe 75 at most when an 04 reg Honda CRV joins the motorway at the junction, he proceeds to fly across lanes 1 and 2 and straight into lane 3, causing me to brake sharply, as I was braking I also flashed my headlights, to let him know I was there!!!

He thrn pulled back into lane 2, let me past, then pulled back out behind me and flashed a set of blue strobes that were on a temp mounting on his dashboard!!!!! My other half, having just woken up started to berate me until I explained what had just gone on moments before!!

He did not try and pull me over, but he did then pass me again and sped off at well over 90!!!

To my mind this was not a police officer, the car did have a gas cylinder warning on the back, so may have been fire service! Whoever it was were using the lights as a rebuke, so should i report them? Read more

The first thing I would do is to drop the fuel filter down out of its housing and check the rubber ring seals. Keep the filter upright, so you don't loose any fuel out of it. There will be a large seal running round the periphery of the filter canister, if, however, there is also a small inner seal fitted, remove it! Refit the filter, and keep the engine revving a bit when you restart to bleed the air through.

The second thing I would check is the security of the wiring to the fuel pump stop solenoid.

My S8 refuses to start!

It cranks over OK but not even a hint of wanting to start. On my way home last night it ran beautifully, smooth, silent, fast, as best as it ever has which usually means there is an imminent issue with it. Come out this morning and nothing. It has an LPG conversion on it so it stopped on LPG last night. I have tried to VAGCom it but I cannot establish communication with the ECU (not good). I thought it may be the fuel relay but that it is not where it is supposed to be according to the manual which is in the fuse compartment in the RH footwell, there are no relays at all in that compartment. It is listed as R17 but I cannot find that in the LH footwell relay panel either.

Do any of you fine gentlemen and ladies have any idea on what could be wrong? Someone usually has a good pointer.

Thanks

When trying to repair the petrol filler flap on my son's Megane I have managed to get it on to the bodywork as well.
A forum search indicates acetone would remove it, would still hold for paintwork?

Thanks as always,

Another success for the backroom! I alternated between hot soapy water and the superglue remover and it worked. At times I thought I was doing more harm than good but a "t-cut" and a wax afterwards and the (black) paintwork looks just fine.

Again, thanks.

Alan.

I don't know what ride comfort would be like.

I recall solid bike tyres from the '70s. They were filled with a spongy material. I tried a bike fitted with them. It felt like they were solid rubber with much less compliance than the highest pressure tyres and the rolling resistance of a nearly flat tyre. I haven't seen any for years.
